successor to the Hubble Telescope is ready - the James Webb Space Telescope

I'm not concerned about that. It's the physics behind it. Once we understand why this thing works, maybe we can explore other means of propulsion.

yap , its very very very inefficient , it has like what , 1,2µ newtons of thrust per kw? (correct me if im wrong but what it boils down to is that solar sails are way more efficient)

who pais for the 200mil satellite? add it to the national debt xD

rocket 'splosions are included in the risk the companies paying for the payload take.

for example if a TV broadcasting company would want to send something to space, they'd conclude "it'll cost this much, with this percentage chance of failure"

and that chance of failure is just included in the budget, it's a sort of lottery :P

you dont know what went on behind the scenes, maybe SpaceX guaranteed it'd get to space, not expecting a failure of this nature, maybe spacecom went sour over it blowing up, maybe there was some money shifting under the table for them to choose spacex. you'd just be guessing about what really went on ;)

besides, there's not any less chance it'd have nuked with either NASA or ESA, to reiterate what i said earlier "failures just happen"

and to compare this with something more down to earth, i met a guy that used to work in the air division of DHL, appareantly there's a shockingly high amount of cargo planes going sploosh, he didnt mention any specific numbers, but it's "orders of magnitude" larger than the amount of passenger planes you see about on the news.

While fantastic news, I wish they could retrieve good old Hubble and bring it back home.  It will be a sad day when it reports in for its last time.

Here's an image of what it looked like in testing. Those gold ripples are the tiny wrinkles on the scientist's suit. Seriously impressive stuff to say the least.

What would they need to retrieve it for though? Surely they could just create a replica or a Hubble 2 if the need arises.

It's a very important piece of history and achievement. Lead to a much much bigger understanding of the universe. It would be nice to have the actual thing on display somewhere. Or something along those lines and let people be able to see it in person. Having the actual thing just makes the experience that much better

Wolther replied exactly what I would. The Hubble has given us so much information, discoveries and pictures that when someone mentions Hubble most people know of and think of it. It's essentially become apart of our culture in a way and certainly our history.

Also think like this, imagine if in Rome they destroyed the colloseam because they couldn't afford to keep it, howany people today would that have dissapointed, or what about the pyramids? We are essentially destroying our own history by willingly destroying it.

I understand that it would be expensive as hell to get it back, but IMO it would be worth every penny.

My point is Hillary would have started WWIII by shooting down Russian aircraft in the middle east.

a lie?! ha!

let me tell you some basic truths:

  • I am not an american
  • I do not live in the US
  • I do not watch US news channels

for the 2016 election, not a single american should've been allowed to vote, instead every 18+ citizen in the rest of The World should've voted for America's president - in one single year, US' IQ dropped into Mariana's Trench

the to most unfitted and unsuited people to be president got in the final election

yesterday, The World just shat itself
