The guy sounds a bit old fashioned. I agree with the title of the post and I wish greater strides could be taken to establish a faster internet backbone in the US.

I'm with Sarcasm on this one. Haha

So if we give him a 56K modem, would he be happy as hell?

Uncle Putin is actually right in this argument.

Kinda. Denser cities do need the connections but it would be better to have it every where. He does have a valid pint on money and costs.

Telecom companies print money.  They should be doing something better with it than using it for bonfires.  They take millions of dollars from the government(s) to "upgrade" infrastructure that was put in place literally decades and decades ago and piss it away claiming a bunch of BS as to why we can't have nice things.

Upgrade big places first, and use them to subsidize smaller ones.  THEY HAVE ENOUGH MONEY.

No not really. Current city infrastructures can still support modern USA cities, but in Japan and other places where the population is packed like Sardines, the cost of operation for the companies begins to drop exponentially making this possible due to the actual need for data hubs that can handle that kind of throughput and a sufficient amount of revenue generated per square foot serviced.

If that were to be done in America it would probably not gain traction because the technology to do this is quite expensive and the common consumer is not going to be willing to pay that price necessary to support it.

This is partially why internet service prices aren't very well  comparable across different continents and areas.

makes complete sense, although it's really stupid that the ISP's that already have fiber installed in their networks won't allow for gigabit speeds

I'd say that 1 Gb/s isn't really needed yet. First they need to upgrade the data storage, the server and the backbones.

And in my opinion they (= ISPs and governments) should prioritize faster speeds for people with really slow connections.

My reply to the guy:

I can feel lucky that I have 30mbit/s, all my friends have only 10mbit/s, highest you can get here is 150mbit/s. Gigabit can be high end, but 250mbit should be standard.

The internet can never be too fast, bandwidth requirements increase every day. The backbone itself along with residential/commercial connections need to be as fast as possible to future proof developing technology, it's just the way progress works. We need more competitive ISPs and less Old Guard telephone companies holding everything back artificially.

I very much agree with what the dude is saying. 600Mb/s is just unecessary. Yes, Japan does have 2Gb connections, but it is also about 30 times smaller and has 10 times the population density of the US. Some people in the US have the shittiest connections available, first you have to guarantee at least 100Mb/s for everyone, then you start moving it higher. It makes no sense to leave some people with 2Mb/s and give 2Gb to others, it's just incredibly selfish of you to even want that.

What this guy doesn't realize is that faster internet pushes storage devices forward. If there is faster internet, people don't have to worry about huge file sizes taking long to download, and will thus download more. If people are filling their storage devices quickly, storage devices need to be larger. In return companies would make larger/faster storage devices. My point is Gigabit would be good for everyone.

Houston can definitely use some new infrastructure. at least AT&T (of all the companies, THIS one, famed for being lazy, advances) is starting to roll out fiber here.

well the highest speed here at me (croatia) is 20 mbs up and 10 mbs dl, now the cost of that is just funny like a joker playing a game on batman, and i have a 512kbs and a dl of 256. so yeah..... your argument is invalid.

I can't say I really look forward to the day everyone has access to such network speeds. Current network infrastructure isn't capable of handling such loads. The day it happens is probably also going to be the day we see Tbps attacks.

implying the government/huge companies can't spare money lol. they're just to dam stubborn receiving completely over-priced paymenys from customers for terrible speeds

I'm sure it could happen easily if the companies gave a dam, but they don't
