New Surfaces

79wjd

I'm not sure how there isn't already a thread for this.....but anyway

Live stream: https://live.theverge.com/microsoft-event-live-blog-2016-surface-hardware-windows-10/?_ga=1.175428902.567596286.1456241257

It looks like the rumors were fairly accurate, a whole bunch of stuff about VR earlier, 3D paint, then a Surface Book refresh, and finally Microsoft announced the rumored Surface AIO desktop.

SSP_327.jpg

Surface Book Refresh:

-16 hours battery life (30% more than the current SB)

-2x better gpu performance

-new cooling

-$2399

-Availble in November, preorders start today

SSP_347.jpg

Surface Studio:

--28" 3:2 "pixel sense" display (13.5 million pixels, 63% more than 4k, 192ppi)

--32gb ram

--2tb hybrid drive

--980m

--very thin (12.5mm) -- because that's critical on a desktop

--12k in 3D Mark (at highest config)

--Cortana support (naturally)

--hinged display -- zero gravity hinge, 20º drafting angle

--supports surface pen

--$2999 (pre-order today)

Surface Dial: (can be placed anywhere on the screen and control a radial menu)

--Supports Studio, SP3, SP4, Surface Book (new and old), and presumably S3 tooSSP_467.jpg

I'm not sure how I feel about 3:2 on a desktop. 3:2 is great on a tablet because you're actively touching/using it, so the 3:2 aspect ratio is beneficial....but on a desktop you won't be touching the screen, so I don't really see 3:2 being particularly good relative to 16:9/16:10, although I'm not the target user base for this device....so maybe there is benefits to 3:2 on a desktop as well?

True 1:1 ratio with a piece of paper for microsoft word....kinda neat I guess, I/O, cortana, thinnest monitor ever, trackpad, input dial), etc:

I/O:

SSP_355.jpg

1:1 ratio with paper in word

SSP_409.jpg

Radial input dial:

SSP_367.jpg

Trackpad:

SSP_417.jpg

Cortana support:

SSP_420.jpg

Radial menus and flattenable displays:

So you can flatten out the display and put the radial control over a certain area and do some kind of manipulation/control with it:

Not a typo, unlike Razer/Apple, Microsoft is trying to differentiate generations. The new generation is referred to as Suraface.

i understand wanting thin stuff (nobody wants a CRT monitor) but if you have a desktop what is the importance of extreme thinness? i understand mobile stuff, but desktop? i am perfectly fine with a bulky tower or even AIO (though i will never get one for myself), but i dont see the appeal of an AIO that is as thin as my phone. if i have the power in it then i need the cooling in it, and i will NOT sacrifice cooling capabilities just so its a couple millimeters thinner

The smartest idiot you will ever find

I'm a little disappointed that the Surface Studio is still using 980m, and no USB 3.1/thunderbolt 3, but the true scale thing is pretty cool;)

Btw, the black suit guy is an excellent presenter. He did a wonderful job last yr, and this year he did good again:D

The AIO is the bottom block of the stand I believe.

Thinner looks more elegant. So I understand why they're doing it. And personally, I would love my desktop to be as thin and minimal as possible (so, again, I can certainly understand why they're doing it).

For me at least, it works well with photo editing (or at the very least, what I do) while being not bad for gaming, actually.

I used to run TF2 at 1500x1000 and it wasn't bad at all.

It looks like all of the PC's guts are in the stand, not in the monitor itself. Which means it's basically like a laptop (kind of).

Interesting to see that the GPU in the Surface Studio is a 980m not one of the newer pascal based ones. I guess this must have been in development for a while or Microsoft got a great deal on an Nvidia fire sale.

This opens the computer up for an upgrade to 4C/8T Kaby Lake and Pascal in Q1 2017 I guess

Also I assume that the GPU in the Surface Book is another custom GPU from Nvidia, likely a pascal version of the 940mx that they used in the last one.
