XFX RX 480 GTR vs Sapphire Nitro+ 480?

handymanshandle

So I recently watched the video by Jayztwocents about the RX 480 GTR from XFX, I'm kinda tempted go go to that instead of the Nitro+ but I like the way the Nitro+ looks and the GTR is technically a little cheaper, not much but like $4 or something like that but still.

From that video he didn't do any real games so idk how it really compares against other RX 480s though I suppose Firemark is a decent idea but again idk.

Take a look at the PCB videos. If you're gonna push OC, take best PCB, and otherwise the one you think looks the best.

Jaz2cents is not someone to promote crap... He usually gives a good opinion of cards, with pros and cons. I would go for performance, and not so much as for the looks...

Sapphire does have interchangeable fans, but I suppose they're not hot swapable, but if a fan was incapacitated or I was cleaning it, likely I would take the GPU out of the PC and therefore the GPU would not be powered on.

Honestly I don't think I'll go too crazy on the OC, though having headroom to OC might be nice.

Well aesthetic is part of the deciding factor, if I decided I really wanted more performance, I would bite the bullet and pay more for a GTX 1070 from EVGA, but I'm fine going with 1080p and maybe not being on Ultra but rather on High and maybe turning down the texture filtering where it isn't needed and shows a good improvement in FPS.

Of course if I was to go purely for performance, I'd be best off spending just a smidge more for a 1060, alas I desire something that looks good too and for me, I find the 480s to have better looking coolers with more features.

Performance side, I would lean on the XFX GTR side. Their cooler is just soo good and has cooling on the VRMs.

Aesthetic side, Sapphire looks way better.

It comes down to which you like the most.

Yeah, idk. I mean if it's not really that huge of a performance boost, I might as well go with what I at least think looks better, and I guess other people agree. Which is pretty nice.

from TTL review on the nitro, i'd have to give the buy to the xfx. the heating from the under-done nitro cooler really cuts into the performance matrix. seems they didn't give enough thought to the fans pressure/performances.

i'd been leaning towards the nitro, till the jayz video and the xfx (bar all that LED crap) should be more beneficial and consistent.

the GTR will deffo have headroom for cooling, less blower-like fan noise.. and again, consistent in-boost with minimal dips and lulls. don't believe the nitro has tha capability at this time.

no doubt, was really ready to pull the trigger and i see where the nitro has it, but if it has the heritage for cooling and doesn't make it so then it still is a pig, just with lipstick on it. the cooling is the first order of the radeon reference cards and sapphire missed it. when ed was on pcper he was proud of the accomplishment (me too..) but when a competitor makes more boost in a lower temperature with less noise, they gotta fix that to be 'the card'. after the hawaii DD cards xfx was really in the uck camp (and kinda still..) but performance should be top o'the list with aesthetics a bonus, in my opinion.

I was in the same situation as you.  I wonder: would the situation improve if we put a fan to direct airflow to it? That nitro card is still on my list because the XFX card is 20$ more expensive + inflated pricing in canada+ no RGB lighting which they should include with their fans or the logo.

Gigabyte just straight out cheaped out on this card. Why do this?

Sapphire nailed almost every AMD release.I was particularly impressed with their 200s (Vapor-X was sleek with its blue), 300s and Fury coolers. I'm shocked when I saw 80 C with that cooler. It's not normal. Plus, it more loud than the competition. Everything else is alright. Good PCB + VRMs (even better than XFX GTR!). What's wrong with them? I heard they wanted to stick to the reference price. :(

Xfx gtr no doubt. Its like comparing a VaporX to a standard tri x.

They're not even in the same league.

Normally i'd say Sapphire. But the NITRO series is a big letdown. They are louder, hotter and IMHO, uglier then previous coolers from Sapphire.

XFX nailed it with their GTR edition. They have, BY FAR, the best cooler design for RX 480s (yet)

XFX uses the best components on that 480... from what I've seen it's the best 480 out there without a doubt. Jay2cents looked shocked at performed so well. It seems like if there was a 480 to get, this would be the ONLY one I'd get and I don't even want one.
