Zippy Battery Charge Rate!

Hi 

 

So i bought a Zippy Flightmax 800mah 3S (11.1V) Battery and was wondering what the amp charge rate and how many cells i charge at a time?

Well you can charge all at the same time you just need a lipo charger. They provide a balance board so each cell is evenly charged and maintained well in the charge process. Usually the rule is 1amp per 1000mah. But I charge 2000mah batteries at 6amps and I haven't had a problem in years.

Well you can charge all at the same time you just need a lipo charger. They provide a balance board so each cell is evenly charged and maintained well in the charge process. Usually the rule is 1amp per 1000mah. But I charge 2000mah batteries at 6amps and I haven't had a problem in years.

Fast-charging will shorten the battery's lifespan, and the faster the more the effect. The "proper" rate for charging is 1/2 C (as in, most cells are specified here on the datasheet), where C is the capacity of the cell (including multiple in series). So for an 800 mAh battery, charge at 400 mA during the constant current phase.

 

If you have to do fast charging, first make sure the battery won't overheat, then only do fast charge through the CC portion of the charge cycle, which will get your battery to 60-80% capacity. The constant voltage part of the cycle can't be rushed.

when charging lipos, you need to charge in multiples of the battery's capacity. So 0.8 amp hours, charge at 0.8 amps for a charge rate of 1C. If you're not in a hurry, you shouldn't charge higher than 1C. This is a pretty damn detailed guide on all you need to know

Batteries have a C rating for their charge rate. So you can check to see what the maximum charge rate is from the product page on that battery.

 

Set the charger to 3s, if you don't you cannot charge the battery as the cells are connected in series.

 

It is not recommended to charge batteries at greater than 1C charge rate, to prolong the lifespan. 

 

1C = 1 X Capacity

 

So 1C for the 800mah battery is 0.8 Amps.

The Zippy Flightmax packs list a 2C max charge rate so 1.6 amps for a 800mAh pack but I would just use a 1 amp rate to keep it safe and simple. 

 

What charger are you using?  The fact that you asked about how many cells to charge at a time kind of worries me.

Yes. But in the product info there is usually another C rating for the charge rate. I am not refering to the discharge C rating.
