why say 2500mAh instead of 2.5Ah?

Yes, but the average consumer doesn't know what Ah means, and bigger numbers sound better.

actually Ah is more convenient.

Think of it like this, everyone knows that VxA gives you watts. So for a battery with 2500mAh, to calculate the watts, say its a 12V battery than it is 12Vx2.5 giving 30Wh. hence using Ah is actually more convenient than mAh.

 

In the past, common batteries (not car ones or those massive ones) struggled to give more than 1Ah so the mAh unit is used a lot such as 650mAh instead of 0.65Ah.

 

If using the mAh unit than the calculation would be in mWh.

Saying 2430mAh, 2520mAh seems more natural than 2.43Ah, at least to me. It could be be one of the reasons.

That would be some much nicer from a physics point of view. (This is all IIRC from now) Ideally, we should measure them in Joules. Watts is joules relative to time. (May be wrong...)

mah is more accurate. Sig figs bro. It helps with the range. Most Lipos aren't 20 Ah. They are in the 200mah-6000mah range

Think of it like this, everyone knows that VxA gives you watts. So for a battery with 2500mAh, to calculate the watts, say its a 12V battery than it is 12Vx2.5 giving 30Wh. hence using Ah is actually more convenient than mAh.

 

In the past, common batteries (not car ones or those massive ones) struggled to give more than 1Ah so the mAh unit is used a lot such as 650mAh instead of 0.65Ah.

Except that almost every other device that uses electricity has the rating in Wh and not mWh. Your PC PSU for instance could say 550W and would also be 550Wh if used at that rating for an hour

Also, smartwatches are much less than 1000mAh, so it would be confusing to say that a battery is less than 1 Ah, or measure in two different units

Same reason most trades man use mm instead of cm, it's just something that's done in trades, often you can be dealing with 3mm, 5mm in designs that can have many metres in other parts, so converting it all to mm saves on the headaches and little accidents and mistakes.

Also I second the motion to rate everything in Wh instead, which is actually the amount of energy and thus make a hell of a lot more sense, especially since it lets you easily compare total capacity between batteries of different voltages.

Tablet and Phone batteries are advertised in mAh. I think this is due to size of battery...........
