Scandinavian Airlines prohibits the Samsung Note 7 on their planes

Scandinavian Airlines stops travelers from bringing the Samsung Note 7 on their planes. 

This friday (9/9) SAS determined that the Note 7 from Samsung isn't allowed on their planes anymore.

 

The SAS head of press, Fredrik Henriksson qoutes: "It's for the safety of our passengers."

They can bring it on the plane, but only if it's turned off and put in your hand luggage.

All SAS pilots will inform the travelers that the Note 7 should be turned off before take off.

Earlier this week, the FAA published a recommendation that no one brings the Note 7 on any airplane. And not to put the phone in their checked bags.

Delta Airlines (USA) have also complied with the FAA's recommendation. 

 

What are your opinions on this?

Seems logical, an explosion on a plane isn't the safest thing on the planet...

I really want to know how Samsung will recover from this kind of bad press.

 

I personally will just dump Samsung Note 7 name and probably say it Note 7+ or Note 7 Pro, just to differentiate something with highly explosive with something normal.

This smacks of the age old problem, people (usually older but not always) in charge of making rules who simply don't understand the subject under their jurisdiction properly. 

 

Also I thought the FAA can only oversee American planes?

Yeah, but the Note 7 is the only smartphone in recent memory who's battery is known to fail and a recall has been issued for.

Ok, you are Scandinavian airlines. Which does it make more sense to do: risk endangering lives and a massive monetary loss by allowing Note 7s on flights, or eliminating that risk entirely by just not allowing them on? The answer is obvious.

I'm pretty tech savvy, and I know for a fact that the note 7 was one of the phones I was considering on buying before this debacle. The Note 7 was marketed to business and power users, and what does that demographic happens to love to do? Travel. Travel on what? Airplanes. There is every possibility that one of the dodgy phones would've been quick charged on a business class socket plug. This problem is more than some damn insta-warriors hating on a company because the phones their daddy bought for them is bending in their fucking pockets. It's a bloody lottery fire hazard ffs

Again nope, Samsung phones will only quick charge with a fully QC2.0 compliant charger and cable so it's not going to quick charge whilst on a plane. 

 

Now that said I do get their point but imo it's a kneejerk reaction to a problem that causes more problems than it solves. They SHOULD have just banned them entirely.

 

Btw did you guys know that the cargo hold of a plane has to be able to contain a fire for a certain amount of time? Why not force them into the cargo hold and contain the problem entirely?

Yes it will, if the plane has wall sockets on board which a lot of them do.

That does not eliminate the possibility since the problem is with the batteries. You can quick charge from power banks and yes, you can plug in a Samsung official QC 2.0 to a 220v wall socket on a plane cabin.

Ok, well granted it's been a long time since I went on a plane and much longer since I flew business class. I wasn't aware planes had wall sockets on them, I thought you'd have a USB slot on your chair.

Economy has USB ports for charging and Business has USB ports and Wall sockets.

Star Alliance (so Lufthansa, United and so on) also require that galaxy note 7s are turned off and not charged during flights.

The FAA is in charge of Civilian air traffic. So if a foreign flight enters US airspace they have to follow our rules.

They don't allow RC car LiPos but if you just put it in the car they think it is non removable and they let it go. I had a 6S Lipo pack in my luggage under the plane and when I took it out I don't know if it was the temp or something but it had swollen so much.

I think the actions from the not just the airlines, but the governing body's for the different regions is way too late, and shows a lack of understanding 
(for background there is a know issue with lithium battery's and issues with smoke filling cabins, and the risk involved, and imo this would have been a good chance to educate the public over singling out a phone)
(I also think samsung have rightly over reacted with the speed of the recall, and the way handled)

lipo's or really all lithium battery's are by law in most country's meant to be in carry on, and not checked luggage ( the simple reason being that there is less chance of crush damage, temp changes that could lead to a thermal runaway, and the other reason being that if runaway happens, in the cabin, it can be addressed (ie, contained so it doesn't set other things on fire) where as if it is in the hold, other things can catch fire, and fire is bad

but the ban is a joke, I would love to see the figures, but I would guess that all the risk has pretty much been removed as not only has it been over a week since samsung made the announcement, but the recall has been in effect over a non work day in all country's and given a good amount of time (and easy) to return the phone, so it is almost a way for airlines to be seen to be being proactive about being safety when they clearly arent

I think the issue here is, people who want the Note 7 have to wait for Samsung to fix the issue and for the Government to give the all clear. Not every one is going to turn their phone in right away , they might wait for new Note 7's to come in to stock first. No offense the Government or airlines have the right to ban what ever they want. You cant walk in to a court building with a cell phone, its on the banned list.. The airline is just making sure a fire doesn't occur, because the risk of fire is not just when the device is being charged. Because the concern is not just for the people on the plane, its also for the people on the ground over where the plane is flying. I live near Detroit Metro Airport, I dont need a plane falling on my house. My sister lives in the landing path of the airport. Every 2 min a new plan is landing.

yeah, you will have people holding on to their note 7, tho, you have to question again the timing, and the remaining risk

in Australia at least, every issue with a phone battery on a plane has in fact been an iphone (not slagging the different camps etc) many related to the Iphone 4 and aftermarket batteries, and with the iphone 6 being easy to bend meaning if they fall down the back of a seat, they can break when the seat is move (the phone bends and breaks into the battery, and that causes issues)
never have those phones been banned on planes, yet there is a history of issues on flights, real issue beyond the world wide note 7 ""explosions"" vs units sold

the same with the old hp batteries, there wasn't a ban on using those laptop battery's

point is the ban on a set single phone type is poor form, there is awareness that is needed by the travelling public, and I think the airlines have missed that chance to single out a phone that is highly unlikely to cause or have been a problem beyond any other LiPo device  

the reported number of failures (and I use the word reported) vs units sold, I think they (samsung) were proactive in the recall, and they are being unfairly punished for being responsible

they could have used this public awareness about the this recall to inform people about the risk that all phones pose (ie, re-enforcing not putting lithium battery powered devices in checked luggage, etc)

the note is LESS of a risk probability wise that any other current phone type 

and let all be honest here, these "bans" are all coming close to, and over a week after the issue was announced by the manufacturer, that isn't safety, that is bandwagon'ing
