Want to switch to PC gaming

I want to make the switch to Pc gaming as it is vastly superior to console gaming, my only problem is the high cost of the initial investment. I currently don't even own a computer; as I am to poor but saving up, and when I acquire one I want to start off right.

 

I am curious to hear what you have to say if you have made the switch from console to pc. Thanks

I made the switch 3 years ago and saved up alot of money and made a few mistakes.

For example i first bought a expensive mobo and pentium so i could oc it was well as a water cooler and then later on bought a Xeon so the mobo was useless.

 

I would first buy AT LEAST a Xeon E3-1231 V3 or better

Some other good cpus are i5 4690(k), i7 - 4790(k), i5 - 6500, i5 - 6600, and i7 - 6700 (k)

 

For ram AT LEAST 8GB Of DDR3 1333Mhz

Preferably 16GB DDR4 2133Mhz

 

And for GPU maybe a RX470/480 or GTX960 4gb/GTX1060 6GB would be good options

i mean he doesn't have to have a monitor, yet. he can just game on his tv for now (since i'm assuming he's had a console and a tv before), and when he has enough money he can get a nice monitor. but i mean if you can afford a pc plus the monitor, that would be good too.

Just look up budget gaming PC's on YouTube. There are lots of good ideas there. Also you can find budget parts on EBay. If you are thrifty enough, you can buy a complete gaming setup for ~$300. (Although it's kind of hard, and you will have to stick with last generation stuff). Or stick with console until you save enough.

The cost doesn't need to be high. Check the specs of my current desktop in my sig - most of those parts (hdd,gpu,ram) were obtained from friends, old laptops and other places. While my current PC definitely can't run AAA titles like BF1 (well it can, I just don't like fugly graphics) all I really need to upgrade now is the RAM and GPU.

Use websites like Craigslist (or Gumtree if you're in the UK) to build an arsenal of PC parts you could potentially use in your build. If you need peripherals, people on Gumtree give out monitors and keyboards for free. If there is anything in your system that you get second hand, definitely don't get a second hand GPU unless you've seen it working properly. If you need any help picking parts, feel free to ask here on LTT.

 

One thing you definitely need to know about is cpu sockets if you're building Intel. LGA775 is DDR2 (Wouldn't recommend that since its several years old, and decent Core 2 Quad cpus only go so far). I'm currently on LGA1151, which is DDR3. Before you buy a CPU, make sure it is the same socket number as your motherboard, or else it won't fit.

I'd say stick to consumer-grade CPUs (i5 6500, 6600, 6600K or some i7 4-series), not Xeons for your first build.

 if you got a budget we can fit a build to it. if you sell your old consle then you should be able to afford a pc

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I think I will stick with a consumer grade cpu. Also I do have a ps4 I could sell as well as a large tv if it really came down to it but I would prefer not to. I do have some money I could spend on a pc right now but I am holding tight to my budget and saving money for a future investment. I may just hold off for a few months and accumulate any recreational money I have to put towards a pc. Would 1,500 be a good amount? I could probably save this by Christmas without damaging savings. Thanks everyone, I am starting some research right now. If any new conputer technology is released between now and then that may be something for me to consider in my build!

 

The problem lies within my judgement and holding off until then, that or i settle for less performance now..

A bit of advice: Unless you're really, really sick of it, I wouldn't sell the PS4 yet. I say this as someone who has sold some consoles in the past and have regretted it dearly. Those pesky exclusives.

 

I think a good idea for you would be to create a list of parts (or a wish list in Amazon) and see what can you add or toss away with time, seeing how prices fluctuate all the time. Pull the trigger when something goes down in price.

I'd wait for AMD Zen and Intel Kaby lake and then see which one has better performance/dollar ratio. They will be released in H1/2017

I definitely have some favorites for Playstation such as The Last of Us and Bloodborne. Also waiting for Yooka-Laylee to be released, which seems like a nice classic.
