So as a lot of you have seen, poodle virgins managed to take down the EA servers with their third world telnet toaster bots.

I personally, have never seen anyone go above 600gbps in raw traffic during a ddos, which shouldn't really be that much for a big company like EA, considering theres companies out there like akamai that can absorb about 30+ Tbps.

 

EA are the only fools to blame.

Was there another attack recently?  Maybe you could post the news story since you clearly have an opinion to with it ;)

There is more to a ddos than raw bandwidth BTW.

What's the "more" part? I was under the impression that DDoS attacks were done by creating a bunch of connections to the target and flooding with garbage data.

I mean, if you have a garbage firewall like pfsense that will crash at 1k pps, then you're right there.

 

If you've got something like a high end cisco appliance, and 100gbps pipes, then a volumetric attack probably won't do too much. (Unless they exceed the bandwidth, that is)

Wait when did you become a mod? Also yes a DDoS is more then pure overloading of data. Someone on the forum explained you just saturate the uplink and the server is done then

In regards to the DDoS attacks, there's a lot more you can do to the actual packets when you flood a server.

If the attackers were to fire up Wireshark and analyze legitimate packets from the Battlefield 1 Beta client, they could craft their own packets that look very similar to the legitimate ones in order to confuse the Beta servers into replying differently to the DDoS packets.

 

For example, instead of the flooded packets being dropped by the hardware firewalls, they might be accepted as "legit", hit the actual Beta server, which will also think they're "legit", and reply back with an answer. At this point, even if the firewall realizes these packets are fake, the first wave has gotten through, and the Beta server is currently wasting time replying to those first fake packets.

This seems meaningless if it were a small attack, sure, but even a nominal traffic spike can plug up a single set of servers and load balancers.

Just because Akamai's network can handle a 30 Tbps traffic load, and an even higher spike, does not mean the actual servers on the other end of the network are configured for this.

 

Probably the best way to mitigate an attack on a smaller scale, such as these attacks on Beta platforms, is to scale the Beta platform during such an attack.

Unfortunately, companies don't always spend big bucks on hardware and services for Beta platforms because they're just for Beta testing, so attacks affect them more often. Makes sense since a Beta is just a Beta, and not the actual game... then again, the new Sim City game had issues too and it was a full-fledged release, so my faith in EA's network stability isn't really that high.

It's a bit more technical than just "flooding with garbage" ... Though when you try to simplify it, that's actually what it is!

 

When I say there's more to it, I'm specifically talking about gaming servers, the weak link will often be the authentication servers, they will never be built the same way as a game hosting server will be. So bringing down a game is often done through those authentication servers, there are ways to circumvent some of all this but in the end, it's almost never possible to completely block a DDoS attack.

I don't think you can blame EA given that this was a malicious attack.

Well I mean, the rape victim could have been carrying a weapon, or some form of defense, and not just walk down a dark empty street with no protection.

EA servers are shit. They have always been shit. And Always will be Shit. Remember they fucked up the release of Sim City due to these servers.

Why has nobody mentioned the fact that Blizzard has been getting DDOS'd for almost 2 weeks straight, and they've held up almost perfectly fine.

 

I haven't touched BF1 yet, and really never will. Not my visual style of game. I wish it was WW2.
