I7 7500U Review

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Kaby-Lake-Core-i7-7500U-Review-Skylake-on-Steroids.172692.0.html

Quote

The Skylake hardware was already able to decode H-265/HEVC videos at a low power consumption, but it did not support the Main10 standard for contents with a 10-bit color depth. Kaby Lake changes that: Our demanding 4K trailer (HEVC Main10, 50 Mbps, 60 fps) is handled smoothly by the i7-7500U at an average power consumption of just 3.2 Watts (CPU Package Power), while the video stuttered noticeably on the i7-6600U despite a consumption of 16.5 Watts.

Quote

Kaby Lake on the other hand is more than just a simple rebranding of the Skylake chips. Even though the 14-nm process was basically not changed, the manufacturer was able to optimize it considerably. The results are surprisingly high clocks or a much lower consumption at the same clocks, respectively. Depending on the frequency range, we can see efficiency improvements somewhere between 15 and 25 percent; it remains to be seen whether the lower clocked Core-m/Y-series might be even better. We are also eager to see the quad-core ULV models. They are planned for 2017 and should introduce the biggest performance gains in the 15-Watt segment we have seen for years.

Seems like Kaby Lake has already been reviewed.

In short it seems to be a refinement, better turbo and adding new media features, nothing drastic.

Also QUAD CORE ULV!!!(Hopefully)

You should add a quote from the article, the pic and maybe a bit more of your take on it too. But good find none the less *goes away to read it*

I wonder why the 7500 was the first to get a review. Maybe it got posted early by mistake?

This is the main thing for me from the whole review honestly:

I had no idea they were coming. Those might be the only ULV processors that might interest me.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Looks like it still doesn't have DP 1.3, or USB 3.1 Gen 2 native support. What a shame. Guess I'll wait for next model to replace my Core i7 930. Not interested in half baked products. Hopefully it won't have the mass number of issues that Skylake had as a starting point.

This is a mobile dual core kabylake chip, there really isn't much to expect from it.

Great for htpc and mobile applications, marginal improvements everywhere else.

I'm ok with that.

More interesting is the integrated GPU performance. It achieved similar results to a 920M which is a 384 cuda core mobile chip. Enough to play most games at 720p for sure.

Which means that it will be defiantly worth it to buy a laptop without discreet GPU in the low end.

As if you need native 5K 60fps support... Also, native USB 3.1 would be up to the chipset, not the CPU. It's too early to conclude that.

Quad-core ULV CPUs?

I think I'm gonna upgrade my Thinkpad to a Kaby Lake-based one instead of this aging Sandy Bridge-based one next year!

That explains why the i5 is hyperthreaded this time around.

Doesn't make up for them shitting the bed with the Core m5/m7 thing tho

I5 mobile has always been dual core with HT. It was recently they added a true quad core i5. Those have a Q in their sku. Q for quad.

There is a lot to remember for intel cpus and some do get them mixed up. Mobile i7 are also dual cores with ht. But there are also some that are quad core with ht and there is also a unlock one.

To explain it to everyone once and for all...

For the ULV series (-U) since it's inception;

  1. Pentium/Celeron = Dual Core no HT
  2. i3 = Dual Core, HT, no Turbo Boost
  3. i5 = Dual Core, HT, Turbo Boost
  4. i7 = Dual Core, HT, Turbo Boost (higher clocks)

For this reason it has historically been a really bad investment to buy a i7-U series chip over an i5-U series.

The 7th gen clock difference between i5 and i7 ( i5 X200U and i7 X500U) is by far the largest ever.

(Broadwell it was a mere 200 MHz, Skylake 300MHz, Kaby Lake 500 MHz).

For the more general 35/45W TDP  (-H/HQ) mobile chips PRIOR to SKYLAKE

  1. i3 = Dual Core, HT, no Turbo Boost
  2. i5 = Dual Core, HT, Turbo Boost
  3. i7 = Quad Core, HT, Turbo Boost

Skylake for the first time ever introduced mobile i5s with Quad Core, NO HT, Turbo boost. This was the unprecedented (surprisingly) i5-6300HQ. Kaby Lake is expected to follow suit.
