Intel releases their new mainstream M.2 SSD

Intel is releasing a new SSD mainstream line!

Intel announces their 600P series of M.2 SSDs for the mainstream market, offering capacities of up to 1TB and speeds which greatly exceed that of traditional SATA SSDs

 

And they are using 3D TLC NAND.

These new SSDs use Micron's new 3D TLC NAND, offering prices which are much more competitive than most existing M.2 SSDs and speeds that are much faster than SATA SSDs. The main downsides of these SSds are that their write speeds are not much higher than performance grade SATA SSDs, though the drives will offer read speeds that are much higher than any traditional SATA SSD.

I'm no SSD expert, but it looks good when ignoring the writes.

Wow those speeds are pathetic. Why even make non NVME M.2 drives? Are they AHCI PCI drives or something? Bandwidth and IOPS are quite disappointing I think, as we need competition for Samsung's 950/960 Pro series, so we can drive down the price. After all, the only difference is the controller anyways, and that simply cannot account for these insane prices we are seeing.

Well they didn't release those to be better than current samsung 950/951/960/961

Those intel ssds are meant for large amount of people who can't afford those pricy samsung M.2 ssds.

 

I might be even interested in buying one of these just because they are cheap and I get 1500MB/s write speed for just 100$.

Write speed? Well since it would be only for OS and few games, I don't realy mind if it will work with "only" 500MB/s.

Hang on 770Mb/s is much faster than other SSDs? Seriously? 

 

I don't really see the point? The read speeds are OK on the larger drives but the write speeds are staggeringly bad and even the iop numbers are just average. 

 

I'm thinking that Intel are banking on them selling due to the name Intel on the box and ignorant customers.

I'm pretty sure the purpose of this line-up isn't to compete with the 950 Pro, after all the 512 gig Samsung model costs as much as the 1 TB Intel SSD.

Yeah write speeds are not that interesting, but reading speeds are. Remember you will never really max out the bandwidth at 1 queue anyways, especially not with a pathetic 35k IOPS on the 128GB drive and a 155k on the 1TB version.

Well obviously not, when it's that slow. Point is that it could be much faster with a proper controller, and that should not add that insane price increase as we see on the Samsung drives. NVME should be mandatory on all non SATA drives (SATA should not be allowed on PCI or M.2.

well i think the thing here to look at is the Price/performance  these look relatively cheap compared to other ones

Considering the price and reads, it looks nice for an OS + Game Library drive.

Especially looking at the price for the 1TB.

that 1TB model looks super appealing. similar price as 1TB sata drives for much higher read speeds and slightly faster iops

Its bad compared to other nvme SSDs, but at least this has the advantage of being much cheaper. The problem with this, is that the write speed is quite comparable to a SATA drive, so why get this when you can get a sata drive for 10-20% less? This is great for an OS drive, not so great for cache or video production

Just searched for it, the 256gb version can't be found under 150 so I must ask: where? Used? Refurbished?

Compare the price with things like the Samsung 850 Evo and 850 Pro, and you'll see why this is a very interesting launch. Yeah there are much faster M.2 NVMe drives, but they cost an arm and a leg.

 

For example, at the ~500GB capacity point, you can pay $160 for an 850 Evo, $190 for one of these, $220 for an 850 Pro or $315 for a 950 Pro. So people need to stop their whining about it being slow. The 850 Evo is damn slow compared to the 950 Pro as well, but you don't see people complaining about that.
