QuadRooter Android vulnerability

QuadRooter is the latest Android vulnerability.

Checkpoint has unearthed a set of four vulnerabilities that would eventually end up affecting 900 million Android smartphones and tablets with Qualcomm chipsets. The vulnerability is dubbed as “QuadRooter” and as one might deduce from the name it has everything to do with gaining a root access to a device.

• Huawei Nexus 6P
• Blackberry DTEK50
• HTC One M9
• HTC 10
• Samsung Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge

Thankfully, Google has already pushed the patch for its Nexus phones via the monthly security updates but still one of the vulnerability is yet to be addressed. Google says that the last of the QuadRooter vulnerability will only be announced in September and the delay is due to the position assumed by Qualcomm in the development chain.

This means root kits (as in what hackers can use to get into your phone), rather than the rooting your phone to unlock additional functionality.

I wouldn't be too worried as Google has already patched 3 of the 4 vulnerabilities with a patch for the 4th on the way.  It's people like me with a vulnerable OEM device on a carrier (in this case an LG G4 and Verizon) who may never get a patch that need to be worried.

The article says Qualcomm chipsets aka the CPU. Qualcomm runs on majority of the phones that uses Android, thus why title says Android, but it's kind of misleading.

Windows Phones that use the same chipset are probably vulnerable as well, because it's a Qualcomm vulnerability, not an Android one.
