Now, Anybody* can buy Microsoft's HoloLens AR headset

AlTech

Now Anybody* can buy the Microsoft HoloLens. This was previously restricted and required anybody interested to fill out an application process.

As for why there's an asterisk there, this is meant to allow business customers and developers to [sarcasm]easily fork over a small price of just $3000 US Dollars[/sarcasm].

Seriously. It's just an Atom CPU with loads of batteries a few fancy sensors and a customized version of Windows 10.

Microsoft is opening up sales of its HoloLens augmented reality headset. In a blog post today, project head Alex Kipman said that all "developers and business customers" in the US and Canada can now order up to five HoloLens development kits apiece, instead of going through an application process. It’s taking orders through the HoloLens website, requiring only a Microsoft account — and, of course, $3,000 per headset.

Microsoft kept HoloLens under wraps for a long time, and it carefully vetted would-be buyers for the first wave of headsets, which started shipping in March. Kipman said that all of these early orders have been filled, although we don’t know how many HoloLens kits are actually in the wild right now. While Microsoft is still positioning HoloLens as purely for developers, sales are effectively open to anyone. Where the previous order page required an invitation letter, the new one uses a standard checkout system. Given the high price and early state of the hardware, this is a purely academic distinction for most people, but it makes things much simpler for people who want to experiment with the headset.

This is cool but the price needs to come down. As a hobbyist developer I don't have anywhere near $3000 let alone $300 USD to spend on it.

So ,those who do not have $3000 USD spare need not apply try :D.

they're mobile game devs with a budget for stuff like this.

They've got Vives, Oculusesesez and whatever VR headset is out on the market.

INB4 someone comes in and compare the BOM cost with the Hololens price and claim that it's overpriced..

The cost of $3000, as @atrash alludes to in his post, is much much more than the BOM. It is to recoup the literal millions of USD that Microsoft has likely invested into this research.

It's not really supposed to be consumer ready yet. They're attracting Devs and businesses that want to invest a ton of money for R&D applications that might benefit from a HoloLens.

Its brand new tech. For brand new tech you'll always pay a first adoption fee and in return get a terrible product (Compared to the next generation). But this is not even close to being a consumer product. I don't even expect it to be a product for the smaller companies.

Although it seems like a cool product and I love to get my hands on it. I am sure that its pretty terrible though, since its the very first of its kind.

As a normal consumer please don't buy this.
