Tesla car was speeding when it crashed

According to federal investigators, the Tesla was going 10 miles per hour over the speed limit when it crashed last May and fatally injured Joshua Brown.[1]  Tesla autopilot system has had a history of speeding and the first ticket was given back in October 2015.[2] Tesla faults the brakes on the car for the crash according to the NYTimes. [3]

 

 

Tesla is offering to investigate further and claims the braking system was at fault instead of its autopilot system. I personally think it seems as if they're claiming it's nothing to do with the car now since they're switching from it was an unavoidable accident since the sky and truck were both bright white. Now they claim it was the brakes. I still like the idea of a fully autonomous car but we're still a good distance off but closer than we've ever been before. The technology is new and still in its infancy, and I think it could have been prevented if the driver was actively paying attention however accidents like this have occurred even without an autonomous car.

Instead, Tesla told members of the Senate Commerce Committee staff on Thursday that the problem involved the car’s automatic braking system, said the staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

 

It was not clear how or why Tesla considers the automatic braking system to be separate from Autopilot, which combines automated steering, adaptive cruise control and other features meant to avoid accidents. Tesla declined to comment on Friday.

 

“Those systems are supposed to work together to prevent an accident,” said Karl Brauer, a senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book, an auto research firm. “But either the car didn’t know it had to stop, or it did know and wasn’t able to stop. Judging by how everyone drives here in Florida, it would seem likely that the Tesla sped as well since it has to maintain proper distances from everything. If you're behind the wheel of an partially autonomous vehicle, you should still be in control of said vehicle.

 

Makes me angry since I really want a Tesla and everyone that owns one is looking at it as a toy or a fully autonomous toy.

I don't think it knows the speed limit properly.

What I mean, is that Windows Maps it knows the road speed limit (and warns you when you go over the speed limit), but I encountered several roads, especially new ones, without any speed limit, or old speed limit data. And while you could say that the car should have a camera and analyses speed limit sign, many times there isn't. You should know as a driver that in x area, the speed limit is x.

 

Maybe what Tesla should do, is that if there is no road speed limit data, it should default to 30km/h, unless overwritten by the driver.

I think that might cause more accidents than speeding by 10 km/h.  Plus, it would make everyone stop using it (which depending on your opinion might cost or save more lives xD)

Well it is 10miles per hour.. so 16km/h, and at 15km/h+ this is where the police won't be nice on you with a warning if he is on a good day, and you get points on your driving license, and the fees starts to get high, at least in Quebec.

Yeah fair enough, I got that mixed up. Still, I think having cars randomly slow down to 30 kph on a highway or something anytime it doesn't know the speed limit would probably be worse than going 70 in a 60 zone

what it come down to is the driver still needs to be a driver and pay attention, not sit there reading a book.  trains, even on a rail, still crash.

this auto drive stuff is like 4k monitors............. every bullshit artist can play at 100 fps even though the technology still doesn't exist to run it at 100 fps.

From what I heard, it tries it's best to avoid a collision but it lessens the impact if there is one by speeding or slowing appropriately. What I don't understand is why the system makes you be alert by asking for feedback and drivers decide that only being aware for a few seconds is acceptable.

In the Midwest,  10 over is the MINIMUM non traffic related socially acceptable speed. 

 

On highways/County Roads anyways. In towns it's more like 5 over.

Everyone talks about doing 5-10mph over and in Ohio we do 10 over everywhere. In Chicago haha wall to wall traffic going 80-90MPH, three cops past us up while going 80mph, no lights, just cruising along.
