Using a VPN in UAE might get you fined or imprisoned

You like privacy, free phone calls and live in the United Arab Emirates? Then you should look out as the usage of VPN or proxies might get you fined or imprisoned.

Last week, the President of the UAE, locally referred to as His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, issued two new laws. One of which, Federal Law No. 12/2016, lays out fines for anyone that uses a VPN or proxy in connection with an online crime. The new law will change the official wording of the Telecom Law to say:

“Whoever uses a fraudulent computer network protocol address (IP address) by using a false address or a third-party address by any other means for the purpose of committing a crime or preventing its discovery, shall be punished by temporary imprisonment and a fine of no less than Dh500,000 and not exceeding Dh2,000,000, or either of these two penalties.”

At the current USD exchange rate, that translates to a potential $544521.48 fine.

 

These "crimes" include accessing blocked services like american Netflix, porn or the VoIP functions of most VoIP apps (FaceTime, WhatsApp, SnapChat)

Since 88% of the population in UAE is imigrated this is a huge problem for anyone who wants to call home on the cheap. Even if you're just on a business trip and use a VoIP service for business you're already in trouble.

 

As you might be able to tell this has become due to the pressure of the 2 main telecom companies Etislat and du to enforce the usage of their services and make a crap ton more money "to stymie the loss of revenue for the large telecommunication industry."

And you thought your ISP is evil.

 

Interestingly enough Skype got unbanned in April due to its lack of encryption just like Etislat's and du's services, so the UAE goverment can spy on you as much as you want.

 

 

tl;dr use FaceTime and get rekt

Must say I find that to be entirely reasonable in and of itself.  Don't get, or care what the hoopla is about.  People using a vpn while streaming temple service from their synagogue while in the UAE should absolutely continue to do so.

what i recommend is just paying for a really cheap vps or cloud service and install ubuntu server and then install openvpn

 

just make sure ur using port 443

and if ur advanced enough use obfs or stunnel + openvpn

Here in Egypt we have a place where tourists or anyone can do whatever they want literally anything from drinking to having *** and it's licensed. 

What i want to say government don't use religion because if they do you would find this.

A lot of things are crimes in the UAE, and encrypted VOIP is a no no because they can't use surveillance on it plus they like to keep monopolies intact.

did you miss the part where it says "for the purposes of comitting a crime or preventing it's discovery" ?

 

using a VPN etc. as per normal and not doing anything illegal with it is completely fine. Nothing to see here folks.
