Apple officially sold 1 billion iPhones

Djole123

So as you know, since the release of the iPhone 2G in 2007, there was a lot of iPhones sold. Infact, Apple officially made it's billionth iPhone in their factories.

2016-07-28 10.06.48.png

In Apple's worker meeting, Tim Cook announced (and held) the billionth iPhone.

Spoiler

“iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history. It’s become more than a constant companion. iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day,” said Cook. “Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference. Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day.”

Good job, Apple!

Well, the parts price is around 150$ if I recall correctly. Since the manufacturing process takes place in China and doesn't cost much more than any other brand, you're paying for the brand itself, the OS, and the huge advertising campaigns behind Apple products. It's not Rolls-Royce, but it's still overpriced as shit.

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

Comparing BOM costs is a silly method of comparing product prices, and even so, some of us are willing to pay the premium to get the experience that we wont

Im not arguing that its cheap, just that, for most people, its a luxury device that they can afford to own plus they are still extremely good devices and still arguable in the top 5 smartphones available and for the people that like iOS its a good device

Sure, but since most people buy on contract its not really affordable for most people in full time work, and its not like you are forced to buy

Nope, but generally people less money don't justify spending it on luxury items, but there are always exceptions

Plus if people buy on 2 year contract the high costs are split into small payments that most people can afford, hence why so many flagship phones sell well

Well, the two year contracts to have a cheaper flagship are generally a scam since it costs you way more than buying the flagship without any contract, at least here in France. People always see the fact that the cost is split and it feels cheaper but it's really not. So not a good example x)

Well lets take that example, and do some maths, i mean the UK is an expensive place to buy electronics

ok

iPhone 6s 64 £619 - directly from apple

Contract price over 2 years, £48 a month =  £1152

Decent contract for decent data/calls = £20 a month = 480 + 699 = 1179

So its a similar cost to buy the phone and get a cheap contract, heck even a £15 a month contract on its own works out at 979,not really that much less

Lets do the same for a galaxy S7 edge

price from samsung £569

Contact £37 a month -  £888

£15 a month contract + £569 = 929 over 2 years

So wait, its cheaper to buy on contract.......

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii

That's why I said at least in France. Quick comparison for the S7 Edge :

54.99€/month for a 24 months contract + 229€ for the phone ~ 1548€

25€/month (without any contract, that's an advantage for me) + 700€ for the phone = 1300€

I was generous on the 700€ for the Edge, it can be find for cheaper. So it's not worth it over here.

200 euro to split the costs over 24 months is not bad its like 8.30 a month so you dont have to find 700 euros up front

still its not like you are paying triple the price etc and often there are other deals iwth contracts

EG my £62 a month contract comes with spotify premium which savs me £10 a month

People can complain about Apple, but that's quite an impressive number.

Is Nokia still no.1?

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

That's why I don't consider that kind of contracts. You always pay for extra stuff that I personally don't care about, but I realize some people might like those features. A 44€/month non-binding contract that gives me 10Gb/month of data, 5Gb/year in Europe, unlimited calls/SMS everywhere in Europe + my internet connection at home seems much cheaper ;)

Well it was the same price at other providers who didnt offer free spotify, generally they are freebies thrown in to attract people to switch network

but each to their own

Still, this is off topic now

Congrats to Apple on 1 billion, ill be picking up my iPhone 7 in a few months when it launches :D

Let's try it in Romania as well.

I currently have an amazing 5 EUR/month plan with unlimited national calls, "unlimited" data, but you know how it goes, I actually have 10GB of 3G and 30GB of 4G, after that it gets throttled. Plus 3000 minutes of calls in mobile networks in EU, US, China and Canada (fixed networks are unlimited).

Let's take for example a 16GB 6s. On Vodafone, it's 219 EUR with a 50EUR/month plan (which is ridiculous tbh, it's worse than my current one and expensive as hell), Over 2 years, the plan will end up costing 1200 EUR. Count the phone in as well, and that would be 1419 EUR. You could also get it for 535EUR with a more decent 25EUR/month plan. Sums up to 1135EUR. Wow, that's way cheaper! (I won't even count lower priced plans because the phone costs as much or more than buying it unlocked, lol).

Now, an unlocked 6S costs roughly 675 EUR. If I keep my plan, over 2 years that would be 120EUR. Sums up to 795 EUR. Quite a big difference, don't you think? But that might be just because I have a ridiculously good plan. Oh well, lucky me I guess.

i5 4670k @ 4.2GHz (Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo); ASrock Z87 EXTREME4; 8GB Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3 RAM @ 2133MHz; Asus DirectCU GTX 560; Super Flower Golden King 550 Platinum PSU;1TB Seagate Barracuda;Corsair 200r case.

Because parts truly aren't everything? I get that you despise Apple, but come on man there is so much more to selling a product. First off all designing the damn thing is something that has to be paid, because the company invested money into it, next you need to build the thing ,then advertising comes in and of course the profit margin of the retailer and the manufacturer.

Yeah the profit margin is high for Apple products, but Samsung is on the same level and I just want you to get that part prices aren't everything.

Ever bought shoes for more than 50 bucks? They probably still just cost $5 in material cost, but advertising, manufacturing, design and some profit margin pushes them over it.
