which is still faster than accessing ram over PCIe, but less than ideal.

just something to inject as some fuel for thought:

threads like this really show what kind of GPU people have.

Yet, the 970 pulls ahead in several titles.

I'm not advocating the 970. There's no reason to get it, but it's still fine for 1080p gaming. The RX 480 is definitely the better card, but you guys seem to be pulling a lot of conclusions without any evidence.

You're comparing apples to oranges. The RX 480 has 4g of VRAM, the GTX 970 has 3.5g of usable VRAM. The 4g of physical VRAM only shows up in some games and runs much slower than the rest. It has no place unless you're almost given it. In DX12 and Vulkan titles if flat out falls on it's face, so has no future. Sorry, but the 970 is a dying card.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

i'm gonna agree to this, mostly just for the fact it's a last-gen card.

if you're looking at future-proof, i doubt there'll be many people recommending an RX480 when the R-whatever- 580 launches. (and isnt a remake)

That's not comparing apples to oranges at all. The 970 has less VRAM according to several of you on here, yet it performs similarly to both the 4GB and 8GB RX 480 at 1440p & 4K.

The argument was about VRAM was it not? The 970 falls on its face in DX12 and Vulkan because of its architecture, not because of its VRAM. If VRAM was an issue, the RX 480 would be slower in DX12 and Vulkan as well.

Like I mentioned before, the 480 is a better card, but from my perspective, you guys are throwing around a lot of false information.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

it has 4gb of vram, BUT only 3.5gb that is fast the last 0.5gb is super slow and just fucks everything up if you end up using it

If you want to spend $200 buy an RX 480 4GB when you can find one, it's the best deal I have seen in years at that price range. If you want to spend $250 get a GTX 1060. Stay away from crap like GTX 960, R9 380/380x, etc. And don't buy a clearance sale GTX 970, the GTX 1060 is significantly better now and the RX 480 is about equal now but has potential to be a much better card in the future with DX12.

Well that was some mixed comments...

thanks though!

Coming from a 4GB vram card ( gtx 980 ) i don't find 4gb vram enough for 1080p, Its already borderline a minimum and you are planning on making a long term investment ( i guess ), save up a bit and grab either the 1060 or the rx 480 with 8gb.

Also when you try to look for benchmarks, lets say rx480 4gb vs 8gb, make sure the reviewer also shows you the frame time, not just the average fps.
