Someone Got Their GTX 1060 Early

7 minutes ago, don_svetlio said:

Well, judging from what I read in the OP - performance is the same as the 480 for 60$ more. Not really good value :/

''They also claim to have paid 1900 Yuan ($285 USD) for their 1060, while a reference 8GB 480 would have cost 1999 Yuan. ''
(In their country at least) the 1060 is cheaper. Again this depends on where but if the 1060 is indeed a bit faster than the 480 and keeps close to its original msrp it's gonna be a success.

I kinda think that part is not legit - look at the 1070/1080 prices due to the expensive FE - that reference card's price is basically saying "yours is better, price it lower" to the board partners. No sane person would price a 1060 ACX 3.0+ lower than a hot reference card. It's just illogical.

Honestly I've no idea why the hell nvidia would do this founder's edition bs. It just fucked up a lot of the prices and they are also charging more for a reference gpu. Then again $$ talks

It's a marketing tactic - they have such a large fanbase that just buy Nvidia becuase "NVIDIA!" that they can afford to fuck everyone in the ass like that

I was never too fond of the 660, the 660 ti was where it's at, imo.

As long as you had the 3GB version. the 2GB 660/ti cards were stuck with 0.5GB of slow memory. oddly enough, the 660 and the 970 have been the most popular cards on steam in their lifetime, and both had the 0.5GB problem. funny how that works lol.

For people talking about the reference 1060, its only going to be available from the nvidia website anyway, so reviews using it are going to be getting worse scores than the custom cards also launching tomorrow. Not sure why nvidia even bothered to give out reference 1060's for review...

They clearly haven't bought it from a real store...

Weird, I was going off of what PCPer said a week or so ago about the FE cards being available from nvidia only, maybe that has changed since then. the FE 1060 is supposed to be a limited edition and only a single run of them will be sold. They must've produced a lot of the FE 1060s if AIB partners are distributing them as well.

Oh....right, the supply shortage. I actually had forgotten that the 14&16nm GPU were in short supply-kind of didn't need to worry about it since I won't need to replace my GTX 970 for a while (it makes me glad I didn't go with a 780ti back in early 2014-using over 3GB vRAM at 1080p in a lot of my games).

I went with a 780ti. I was quite interested in how the AIB 480/1060 battle shaped up as a stop gap until 1080ti/vega and the next big 4K /21:9 panel release. However now I'm thinking of just living with the classy until next year regardless. Given all the drama over shortages, pricing, etc.

Its probably best to wait at least 12 months before even considering an upgrade with the way things are going.

I only watched a few min of each... so they look about equal?  I know, clocks are a factor and I did not watch closely/long enough to see the clocks.

Yeah, they seem fairly close. Based on Temps I'd say they're both at stock clocks. The only graphic setting difference is the 1060 was using FXAA, while the 480 had AA off.

Gainward-GeForce-GTX-1060-Gale-Edition_2

Someone claims to have received their Gainward Gale GTX 1060 early and posted some Firestrike and Timespy resluts, along with a GPU-Z screenshot of stock and overclocked specs. The "Gale" is clocked higher out of the box than reference. They also claim to have paid 1900 Yuan ($285 USD) for their 1060, while a reference 8GB 480 would have cost 1999 Yuan.

The CPU they are using is an i5 6500, with a 3.2Ghz base clock. It would have been preferable to see the tests done with an overclocked K series i5 or i7, but beggars can't be choosers. The one thing that stands out is the Driver version. Driver 368.81 has been available for a day or two, yet they are using 368.56 here. Old drivers are not uncommon it seems with this years GPU leaks.

I've looked up RX 480 3DMark Firestrike and Timespy results using the same cpu for comparison.

The best 480 graphic score for Firestrike Ultra using an i5 6500 is 3095 http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9049476

The best 480 graphic score for Firestrike Extreme using an i5 6500 is 6281 http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9179510

The best 480 graphic score for Firestrike Timespy using an i5 4670 is 3901 http://www.3dmark.com/spy/57377

(I couldn't find a 480 Timespy score that used an i5 6500, so I found the best score using the closet equivalent)

(this maybe off topic but) this just looks so cool
