it's a peripheral device that is supposed to be as dumb as a mouse, keyboard and display - I've been using my main display for over two years, my secondary monitor was bought in like 2008 or something, I just recently replaced a 10 year old keyboard and my mouse has been in exploitation for like 4 years

 

the fucking rift has been on kickstarter since 2012 and bought by Zuckenberg bringing in billions in development funds, given the situation - if you can't do it right the first time, then I don't think you can ever do it right

arguably Vive has been in an even more favorable situation due to Gaiben and influence "by gamers".

 

Hence the only worthy HMD products IMHO are

OSVR - for being open source, having like a bagillion key partners in both hardware and software as well as academic support

StarVR - for being the fucking best HMD hardware

This is really incredible ignorance. There was definitely a time when you'd want to upgrade your monitor often, because the technology was evolving. It's just a much more stable, established market today. If it were up to you we'd still be using monochrome CRTs.

 

The fucking Rift got from hot glue prototype to a polished consumer product in 4 years. Faster than a LOT of other tech. Your claim that they "didn't do it right" is BS. Just because you can do something better next year or next decade doesn't mean you were doing it wrong.

 

OSVR is a kinda crummy devkit. They're the ones who are ACTUALLY stuck in development limbo, as you accused Oculus of.

StarVR, even more so, since they haven't even launched a devkit.

OSVR will never be done because it's open source, you can upgrade and replace parts on your own

StarVR is the do it once do it right kind of thing and they don't have the bagillions of Zuckenberg's doe

And people don't want something they have to hot glue together. It's fine as a devkit or a niche product, but it's not going to be the backbone of the VR market that way.

 

Yeah, the StarVR prototypes were bad enough that no major company was interested. That lack of investment will further hamper its development and commercialization.

Minor changes might be, finding ways to reduce size and weight. Maybe thinner/more flexible cables. Maybe some optical changes but I wouldn't count resolution of display in that. I think they would likely look for ways to reduce manufacturing cost too. For a new product area like this, they will likely have optimised time to market over manufacturing efficiency, so it is possible for changes to happen that might not directly noticed by a user other than costing less when they see it in store.

 

I do like the current flexibility of allowing the user to connect any headphones they like, although it would be a minor plus if something could be semi-integrated so it could be essentially put on in one go more easily. Right now the headphones I'm using I have to put on after the Vive itself, and as they're hi-fi ones, there's a lot of excess cable. So I say semi-integrated in the sense I'd like some options, and not be prescribed just one style.

I thought the same thing until i tried it at work.  It's amazing!  Once they get a low latency wireless version and a little higher res screen, it will be ridiculous.

I like the Vive but I think everyone who used it can see that there needs to be a lot of work done before VR-experience will be something for daily use.
I think it isn't the worst sign that Vive is interested in improving their product and releasing new revisions.
I for one am very excited for improvements.
