I'm more surprised that I even got to 5gh on a cheap ass board when my high quality one shit out at 4,8ghz .... kinda makes me wonder if I can get anywhere near 5500mhz on some cold , guess I might have to try it one day

I would try pick up some cheap $25 psc as well. That would help you a lot in most 2d benchmarks.

Decent ddr3 memory. You can get 2*2gb kits very cheap now and they run fast with good timing.

That's somewhat off the point here i think,

If you do mild overclocking you will get slight performance increase, if you do higher overclocking then you would gain more; but then it will be the same problem, as no one can actually precisely tell you when it will die or by how much faster your CPU is degrading when you overclock it, and therefore comes up with a formula to calculate if it is worth while to overclock your expensive processor there.

 

The suggestion i gave was very specifically meant for rendering task only, to use distributed rendering, where you would have a workstation controlling multiple network render nodes which could be as cheap as dual 1366s, but offering the benefits of not having your workstation doing all the rendering, thus giving you freedom to do other work or whatever you desire with your workstation while the nodes render the said frame. The idea behind all of this is to cut down cost and multiply performance :

Lets say you have your 6950x workstation which would score some 1900cb, ofcz it would beat dual x5650s who would only get 1300cb. But for the price of your processor, you might be able to put together 3 or more of these 1300cb systems, link them together to your LAN and have them work on a single render frame, the result will be dramatic. Although bear in mind that because of latency issues its only wise to do so on large and demanding projects otherwise lag will outweigh the benefits altogether. Also if they are that cheap you wouldnt really worry if they breakdown bcz spare parts are very very cheap.

 

So, should you overclock your processor? Personally i would say why not because i would love to find out how far i can push the CPU, but not everyone would think the same, the decision is yours really. Result wise you can go to hwbot.org to find out.

Yeah it is too high but luckily many people will buy then for 2 core glow balls so I will get a used one.

No,  Samsung is way more expensive because is 2*4gb so it's useful for other things.  Psc is the better choice 2400-2600c7/c8.

I would say 1250-1300 for that cpu.  If you do the tips from the op then that should get you a decent increase,  also if you look on the spreadsheet at the 2011 socket sheet you will see what other people are getting with similar cpus.

4.7-4.8 should do it.  Also use W7 in Realtime and high performance mode for best results.

The cpu and cooling may not be good enough for that speed.  Running realtime,  closing programs and tuning primary ram timings should get 20-30cb extra.
