Been using Xeons since 775, so I don't want to break that tradition. :P As for the 5820K, I want to be able to run 2 cards at full x16/x16 cause my X48 was able to do that. The Xeon E5 1650 v3 is a 5930K with ECC ram support.

fair enough.

shit the bed! i never knew they did that! just googled it and you are correct. thats cool. isn't it the same price as the 5930k though?

@harrynowl have you thought of getting a e5 1650, they might oc better than you 3930k and would be ok if you can sell your 3930k for more? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-1650-3-2GHz-SR0KZ-Six-Core-12M-Cache-And-Cooler-/201467136918?hash=item2ee8608b96:g:BssAAOSwl9BWI5Oa

I just had a look and that looks like a good idea...

My 4930K is very likely to go for ~£300 and I conveniently have just over £150 in my PayPal atm from eBay sales...

Should I do it do you think? The Xeon would have to do like 4.6 to be any faster than my 4930K (as it's a Sandy-E) but I think the monetary difference makes up for it :P

@NumLock21 I assume it's just support for ECC and not requires ECC? The only ECC memory I have is DDR1 :D

yeah you should go for it! even if its a bit slower you made money on it. it doesn't require ecc ram, you can use it though

The cpu supports both ECC and Non ECC ram. ECC functionality is also based on chipset and X99 don't have that function.

I was only after 3930Ks that went for less than £160 which they do from time to time.

explain? it doesn't make sense

what is this tape mod? i wonder if it will work on my hp.

It is magic - its known as a BSEL mod for FSB and a VID mod for voltage.

It allows you to overclock/overvolt on a board that does not support overclocking, like OEM boards and servers.

Basically you can either connect pads together (using a circuit pen to carefully draw tracks), or isolate them (using sticky tape), to trick the motherboard into running a non-standard FSB and/or voltage.

As long as the motherboard can support the FSB you are attempting to run, it will work on 99% of mobos and on every chip, some mobos use a "look up table" or sorts to decide the FSB based on the CPU model type rather than its pin config so in that case the mod wont work.

Here is a table of the relevant pins on an LGA771 (LGA775 is almost identical)

post-144788-0-25516600-1448066415_thumb.

I covered pad H30 (BSEL1) to go from 333mhz to 400mhz - I didn't bother with voltage, at 1.2v the CPU is rock solid

I might buy some X5470's (if I can find some for dirt cheap) and do this mod to get 4.0ghz - that may require some additional voltage.

here are some pics of my mod (note that G30 is actually covered in these pics, this is wrong and I had to remove and replace the tape over H30 to get 400mhz)

Its more stable than increasing the FSB through the bios, right? Because my P5Q motherboard really aren't that good at overclocking (either that or I really need to RMA my CX850M).

I know the board I'm using on my FX 8120 is really shitty, but it literally can't handle the 8120 at 1.41v+ without black screening under load... At least it can do 4.2GHz 100% stable at stock volts. (1.38v)

I dont think it would make a difference... the good thing is that this mod still allows my chipset to run the right ram ratio. I tried with 800mhz ram (4gb) and with 667mhz ram (12gb) and both worked with the FSB at 400mhz

so maybe if your board was also trying to overclock your ram you could try this mod to see if it sorted its own ram ratio

its an intel 5000P

according to the below table it might not work. maybe see if there is a specific BIOS update that "enables" 1600mhz FSB? I have a feeling its only "greencreek" and newer. and "officially" its "seaburg" and newer

Well the RAM is rated at 800MHz, though if I take out the 2x 2GB standard sticks for my Team Xtreeme Dark 2x1GB kit I can run 1066MHz with it.
