They ask you for the information but you doesn't have to give them.

But the 1070 would be a popular card, as the 970 was if it wasn't that overpriced.

The point isn't that the steam hardware survey captures anyone, I just suggest there shouldn't be any significant systematic difference in user proportion. Thus it is still relevant.
