AMDs next gen GPUs are still a let down in my opinion. A closed graphics API and some audio crap that isn't needed... GG!

Audio is needed for the hdmi, personally I love hd sound... I mean have you played OpenTTD on HD 5.1 surround.

As for the OP is he saying that consoles are behind because PCs can access the GPU at a hardware level? Because that's what they've always done maybe with the exceptions of the Xbox.

I love it how everyone is munching up these news. If it was really to be so, then why did no one ever come up with this before in the past I don't know how many years. -_-

You are absolutely right.  IF cars where ever to be true why didn't they come up with them years before they did, or why didn't anyone fly years before they did, as a matter of fact, why haven't we created teleporters or warp drive yet?  Why on earth did we wait so long to come out with cell phones?  Who's bright idea was it to wait so long on reigning in the power of electricity?  The microchip, why didn't we just go straight to that?

There are three motivators for innovation and technological advancement (especially in relation to spending money to do it):

1.  Praise of gods or Royalty (avoidance of judgement)

2.  War (avoidance of death)

3.  Economic Return (avoidance of debt)

So check things as they come, AMD is in fact chasing number 3.  So notice in the past what they have done to increase their economic return, notice that innovation only occurs when they run out of ways (marketing schemes, giveaways, improving current products) to improve upon current investments or the competition comes out with something new.  HOWEVER, from time to time, there will be someone who doesn't need an external motivator to innovate.  So 1 of 2 things happened here.  They ran out of ways to improve upon or remarket current investments and therefore are in search of new economic return in order to be competitive in the market, or they decided to blow the lid off something and be innovative just because they have the ability and the personal gain of knowing you accomplished something not yet done outweighs the external economic (gods/royalty,war,return) factors or gain.

So yeah, just because something hadn't been done yet doesn't mean it cant, there will always be a place and time where something first emerges, don't think that because you witness when it happens that it's really that abnormal just because you can't do it yourself.  The knee jerk reaction is disbelief and rejection.  Maybe it is as great as they claim, maybe it wont, but never assume either way until you have the chance to witness it for yourself, because anything otherwise is just another regurgitation of the talking heads.

Ok so AMD Mantle just surfaced, it is simply groundbreaking... So groundbreaking in fact that me and others who understand are speechless!

Heres why...

MANTLE + AMD GRAPHICS CARD = 8 to 9 TIMES THE FPS!!!!!

THIS MEANS THAT NOW CONSOLES WILL HAVE TO STICK

WITH THEIR HARDWARE FOREVER AND PC HAS JUMPED TO

2016 ALREADY, AMD WILL SHOW DEMOS IN Q1 2014!

WONDER WHY BF3 GETS HIGHER FRAMES ON AMD

GRAPHICS CARDS? WELL AMD ALREADY PUT SOME OF

MANTLE'S CODE INTO FROSTBITE'S ENGINE!

DO YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

DEVELOPERS WONT HAVE TO RELY ON CRAPPY MICROSOFT'S DIRECTX ANYMORE.INSTEAD, THEY HAVE FULL CONTROL OVER ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING.

GET READY GUYS... BRACE YOURSELVES, THE FUTURE IS HERE!

You shout a lot but understand so little.

8-9 times FPS was never stated anywhere and will never happen, it's not possible with current hardware. What was stated is 9x faster sending draw calls which you clearly didn't understand. It's not about FPS, it's about how fast can CPU talk with GPU about rendering stuff, so to speak.

Not to mention Mantle is not out yet so shouting about it as a groundbreaking thing is silly... I'll believe it when I see it. Same with R9 290x as Titan killer... we'll have to wait for non-biased benchmarks before claiming it is faster than any GPU ever made because we simply don't know yet.

Only one game was announced to support Mantle now (Battlefield 4) and it's not instantly but rather in December patch (plus a promise for support in future EA games) so it's nowhere soon.

Sooo the long answer to this thread is: Not yet, if ever.

And a short one is: NOPE.

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

CPU: Phenom II x6 1045t ][ GPU: GeForce 9600GT 512mb DDR3 ][ Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P ][ RAM: 2x4GB Kingston 1333MHz CL9 DDR3 ][ HDD: Western Digital Green 2TB ][ PSU: Chieftec 500AB A ][ Case: No-name without airflow or dust filters Budget saved for an upgrade so far: 2400PLN (600€) - Initial 2800PLN (700€) Upgraded already: CPU

i dont care if i dont see any improvement on the gpu side.

I just want to see better multithread performance. For example games like arma 2/3 just suck balls on cpu utilization, starcraft 2 and other similars.... That alone is reason enough

Yeah, no... I think you just had a premature erection... This low level API is not the first, in fact there were many before him, the best known being Glide from 3dfx which, as we all know was bought by nvidia, which was then turned to "nvapi" which is being used... sometimes. Many tried, all failed... for a reason. Please refrain from further contaminating people's brains with disinformation like this.

Intel 4770k@4.6GHz, ASUS ROG Maximus VI Hero, Kingston HyperX Beast 2x8GB 2400MHz CL11, Gigabyte GTX 1070 Gaming, Kingston HyperX 3k 240GB - RAID0 (2x120Gb), 2xWD 1TB (Blue and Green), Corsair H100i, Corsair AX860, CoolerMaster HAF X, ASUS STRIX Tactic pro, Logitech G400S, HyperX Cloud II, Logitech X530, Acer Predator X34.

8x performance? Really? I guess we'll all play in 4k with one R7 250x then. No need for anything more powerful.

It's not 9 times the performance...the CPU and the game itself will be able to access the GPU 9 times faster.
