RX 490

XdoniasRadeon

hey I follow AMD extremely closely and believe i have a pretty good grasp on whats coming from amd after watching alot of content and researching articles from people in the industry.
The RX 490 is without a doubt Vega this has been stated by kudori today on a live broadcast i saw on a youtube today. It will be coming out Q4 this year this was confirmed by him. This is supported by the fact there is limited time offers for buying a Radeon product within a timeframe ending on the last day of 2016. The RX490 was listed as one of the eligible products to be redeemed for the offer. Im not sure the RX 490 will have HBM2 on the base model variant. I believe it may have 8-12 GB GDDR5X/GDDR5 variant and then a more expensive model with 8-12 gbs of HBM2. there likely also will be RX 4X5 varients coming out in the new year i believe for polaris and Vega. I do think they may also go with a multi gpu card like a poster said before. AMD describes Navi as scalability which to me kind of sounds like dual gpu cards with polaris or vega chips. Koduri always points out gpus arnt moving fast enough for the demands of VR/4k/5k and at some point there gonna have to look at multi gpu solutions like crossfire and Dual gpu cards. They just acquired a new software company to help them with drivers/software. I dont see any cards past a RX 490 or RX 495 so maybe they will go with a named card mid 2017 with Navi to finally replace the Fury/Nano/Fury X/Pro duo. Its going to have new memory from a inhouse company called nexgen AMD acquired a bit ago. I would assume this is better/cheaper then HBM2. this would properly replace the whole lineup.
360>>>460 Polaris

370>>>470

380>>>480
390>>>490 Vega Q4
Fury>>>??? Navi 2017

If the 490 doesn't surpass the Fury X/980 ti/1070 AMD is gonna have a hard time getting market share up top but i guess they need to get more money coming in.

You're assuming in this post that Vega will only be one chip. Is there a reason for that?

Polaris has 10 and 11 (480 and 470, IIRC), so it's safe to assume that there is a decent chance that Vega will also have 2 chips.

Furthermore, we haven't even seen any cut down chips yet from Polaris, which I find a bit unusual. The 470 might be a cut down Polaris 10, but I haven't seen confirmation either way yet (And that's assuming that the 480 isn't actually the cut down variant).

I assume that Vega will have at least 2 different GPU's: A 490 and a Fury replacement. It seems they are avoiding the "4--x" series naming scheme, and simplifying it to non-x models. We'll see if they keep up with that, or simply introduce the x variants later.

I just havnt heard of another gpu or anything that would fit the naming scheme for RX 4XX series. Its not unusual for a chip to simply just have 2 variants of one chip. The 390/390X was its own chip. Tonga on the 380/380X was its own chip. but moreso I see a 485 coming out in the fall aswell with the vega chips as a revision to the 480. They will likely have a 490 and 495 available in Q4. they announced the 390 and 390X at the same time and im seeing them releasing it the same way again. They Revised the 380 that came out in the spring with a 380X in the fall so i can see them having a 485 available near the same time as vega. this would help close the gap in the market there likely is going to be and like there was before.

one thing im surprised about is how far Navi and Volta appear to be on the company roadmaps. They really didnt build the fury chip to last at all as the whole upper end gets smashed by 980 ti/1070. I see 1070 for same price as fury cards... they need to drop the prices if they ever wanna sell any. the 490/495 need to be near 1070 performance and atleast 5-10 percent from a 1080. Id rather pay the same for relatively the same performance then get a deal and take a massive hit in performance. 1070 retails for 550-650 in canada and the 480 is 259-350. they really need a 500 dollar 490 then a 550-600 495 but really come through on the performance. They are able to do great on the lower and mid end cards compared to nvidia but in the upper end they get destroyed.

Vega is coming out in 2017, AMD debunked the rumor of vega 10 coming out in October. Also, isn't the RX 480 the full polaris 10 chip? It makes sence, given how the 470 and 480 are the same chip, it would be stupid for them to have 3 cards based on 1 GPU.

I have a Fury Nitro and an FX 8320E. Screw my life?

Why would that be stupid? Granted, CPU's aren't exactly the same, since the sizes and complexities are different, but Intel uses the same base silicon chip for like half it's consumer lineup.

It may not be ideal, but I'd like to hear why you think it's wrong to do.

Well... how about that 480 is the Full Polaris 10 chip, there a no locked compute units on it

so it'd be very wrong to even consider making 120% out of the chip... cus like conservation of mass and energy or sumthn...

Do we really know for sure that the RX 480 is the fully unlocked chip?

the guy that's responsible for technical marketing and that is not Robert Hallock, he wouldn't lie, would he?

I mean I haven't seen the guy and I don't trust him, but his job title feels credible...

Also Raja has said 480 is the fastest Polaris 10 chip, they don't plan to make any more Polaris chips but if they do the number will go down, Polaris 1 would be fastest

but for now RTG engineers are on full throttle to make Vega happen as soon as it is possible

Pretty sure AMD has said no high end cards this year.  Seems unlikely they would go against that and release a surprise gpu.

All I care about is they bring the Vapor-X back. They do that and I will find a reason to buy one.

If anyone asks you never saw me.
