GTX 1070 same performance as R9 390

Simon771

So I just watched this video here:

At 1440p ultra it gets around 35 fps.

Then I watched this video:

R9 390 at 1440p ultra ... again 35 fps.

Any idea why is GTX 1070 performing like R9 390/GTX 970? It should be much faster than that according to released benchmarks and specs.

Bad launch drivers maybe? I doubt they'd release a 70 tier GPU that doesn't perform better than its predecessor.

well hairworks was on for the 1070. And we all know that thing kills performance. Looks like it killed the 1070 as well.

those videos are not comparable since they are from 2 different systems and with launch drivers!

I don't know. This is why I prefer written reviews that spell everything out with a scientific level of detail to most Youtube benchmarks. They don't leave us to figure out on our own what they did differently than everyone else.

No Hairworks and SSAO on 390, also different location of the games.

I swear AMD was bashed for bad launch drivers, now nVidia is being defended for it? Didn't some people complain that a GPU should have top notch drivers on launch in the RX 480 instead of getting much longer driver support and performance increases each update??

There are more factors at play than just the GPU here. realistically the gtx 1070 preforms quite closely to the 980ti and titan X. these both beat the 390 by a fair margin, so if you're ever seeing anything that says a 1070 will perform similar to a 390, its probably a finge use-case scenario. Improper CPU in the system, different graphical settings, drivers, game specific non-optimization, etc.

I hope to see more benchmarks and gameplay on that GTX 1070 ... it would be a shame if it would perform like my current r9 390.

Just noticed that hairworks are off for R9 390 ... not familiar with this setting, but that might be it :)

Most reviews show it perform like 980Ti/Titan X in Witcher 3 anyway.
