Lucas9825

Debating on which gpu I want to get for my new build, Should I purchase the aftermarket 1080 or the radeon 480?

Well, the GTX 1080 is three times the cost and likely about twice as fast as the RX 480. The 1080 is a brand new high-end card, whereas the RX 480 is aimed at the middle of the market. There's quite a difference between the two.

What sort of gaming do you want to do, at what resolution and what framerate?

480 is mid end, 1080 is high end.

2x 480 was shown to be a bit better than the 1080, but I will take that with a grain of salt.

The 480 has way way better support for dx12 than what any of the 1000 series will have.

Yeah... the 480 is at an excellent price for the minimum VR spec, but the 1080 is WAY above that spec for a much higher price. Wait for the higher end AMD cards if you want to compare one to the 1080.

If you can drop 2 480's (see what I did there?) in your system, they will absolutely pay off.

the 1000 series is basically a modded version of 900 series with a die shrink and they are in no way optimized for DX12 or async compute

We'll know better once real benchmarks start appearing, but my instinct is that there's really no such thing as overkill if you want to continue playing brand new games at or around 144 FPS for the next few years. Get the fastest thing you can afford. I don't think you'll want a midrange card like the RX 480 for that.

The only benchmark is AoTS, which is more than likely, best case scenario.

We have an idea (ranging from 390 up to the Fury), but it's still hazy. I doubt it can drive 144Hz.

yeah true, AoTS is pretty much an AMD card favourite

regular games the 480 would probably perform worse than 50% a 1080

In the livestream, they had DOOM maxed out @1440p with 60+fps, similar to the GTX 980's performance.

Yeah because it uses DX12 and Nvidia cards are not good that.

No, a 970 pulls over 100 fps in Doom. I know because my buddy plays Doom.
