Posted May 30, 2016 Currently have a 970 which has served me well up until recently when it started overheating quite badly, Should I buy the GTX 1070 or 1080 for 1080P 144hz? I can afford both but I'd rather save money if the performance won't be much of a difference due to my resolution, What do you guys think? Posted May 30, 2016 1080P 144hz? Almost anything. Here's what I say, buy a cheap used GPU, like the 7970, then wait for Vega/Volta next year. All of the current chips are going to be pretty much obsoleted. Posted May 30, 2016 Even the 1070 might be overkill tbqh. A 1060 would probably be perfect, but that's still several months off (if it actually happens). Wait and see what Polaris brings to the table--the "480" might be perfect for 144Hz 1080p. Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried. Posted May 30, 2016 My 970 (although it doesn't seem to overheat like yours) performs fine at 1080p on my 144hz monitor. GTX 1070 on a 1080p monitor 1080p would literally be a bottleneck for GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 can easily handle 1440p but since you want it at 144hz which means high framerate I think 1070 would do perfectly fine, check out the 1070 benchmarks on LTT it literally goes up to 150fps on some games at MAX settings amazing!
