my $10k computer seems.... slow

Hi there,

I have a new work computer that is pretty well decked out, but it feels slow.  My previous work computer was a dual xeon HP z820 workstation (16 cores and 256 Gb ram) with a k5000 graphics card and this one is not.  Could it be that I'm spoiled with workstation grade components?

the New computer:

ASUS Deluxe motherboard

Intel 5960X (not overclocked)

64Gb RAM

Intel nvme 1tb storage

Nvidia 980 graphics card

Windows 7

and before you comment - YES, I actually need and use these resources.......

All CPU and graphics benchmarking scores are as expected, but application launch time is noticeably slower than even my laptop.

It seems as though there is some loooooong "ping time", but then loads very quickly.

I see the delay with everything from microsoft office, Chrome, outlook, to matlab.

Any advice?

I would personally get a "simple" pro-grade sata ssd. it's possible pcie drives aren't perfect atm.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

The only thing I could think to do would be to test a different boot drive.
There could be an issue with the PCIe drive.
What a system, though. The 980 almost seems out of place.

windows 7 isnt really optimized for fast ssd's. i would recommend to upgrade. also make a ssd benchmark and check if all the necessary drivers are installed.

1. Upgrade to Windows 10 (Optional, Recommended)

2. Get an SSD (Optional, Recommended)

3. Clear out your hard drive(s) (JUST DO IT)

4. Defragment your hard drives (JUST DO IT)

Uhh, he has an ssd.  Defragmenting an ssd is like smashing it with a very tiny, but very real hammer.

I can help with programming and hardware.
