I see many i7's such as M,X,K models etc...

I tried to google but coudnt find anything. I want explanation what the letters are all about and what the exact differences is. Any links? Perhaps my googeling skills is bad lol

And i guess its the best to buy a i7 processor with a higher number next to it? Such as a i7-6700  instead of a i7-4900 or something.

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/processor-numbers.html This explains everything about Intel CPU's suffix

And it depends on the situation you are in to buy a CPU, if you are buying from scratch then get the latest since Intel CPU doesn't have much price different between generation and so does their performance

Ok

i3 - Dual core

i5 - Quad core

i7 - Quad core with hyper threading

Numbers

First number is the series, so 4th gen, 5th gen, 6th gen

the numbers after are the model so 400 vs 700 etc

K = unlocked for ocing

P = no onboard GPU

M = Mobile

etc etc

M = mobile

K = you can overclock it

X = it's an extreme edition (usually only for the i7's, these CPU's feature more cores than the standard, like the 5960X has 8 cores rather than the K CPU's in the same series having 'only' 6). It can overclock too.

K= unlocked multiplier (can be overclocked [1])

M = Mobile

X = Extreme

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/pcs/cpus/1400962/whats-the-difference-between-core-i3-i5-and-i7-processors

[1] There are some board/proccesor combinations where a small O/C can be performed by varying the baseclock but generally the most common and easiest thing to do is alter the multiplier.

i3 are Intel's base line consumer models. Typically dual core, often with hyperthreading. There are no K or X SKUs in the i3 range (AFAIK)

i5 are Intel's middle consumer processors. Often quad-core, without hyperthreading. Preferred choice for a lot of gamers, as they offer good performance for the price.

i7 are Intel's high end consumer processors. mostly quad-core with Hyperthreading. Good for gaming, but also offer additional benefits for editing, rendering and similar workloads when compared to i5s. Intel's enthusiast CPUs also use the i7 name.

M means mobile CPU I believe. K typically means the CPU is overclockable with a motherboard that also supports overclocking, as well as often having a higher baseclock compared to its non-K counterpart. Overclockable CPUs are not exclusively K SKUs, though. Some overclockable chips use X (a handful of enthusiast CPUs) and C (Broadwell), or have no letter after them (G3258). X is essentially the same as K, but used on a few chips (normally top of the line) enthusiast CPUs like the 5960X.

Going for a higher number after the first digit is generally a way to get more performance. The first number (eg. 6700K) refers to the generation of CPU (in that example, the 6th generation, which is Skylake).

How much $ do I need to spend minimum if I want a gaming CPU?

I was thinking about a high end CPU. I want to make a complete desktop for around 1000$ so I thought about a CPU around 300$.

6600k is 230$

So the current gen is 6th. When will 7th gen come?

I only see letters "K" and "T" for desktop on the 6th gen.

So I guess I need to buy the K one.

I see a i7-6700K for 350 Euro.

Edit: The newest one is i7-6700K as far as I can see on the webshops.

All are good for certain reasons. Most people buy an i5 for gaming, though some people use an i3 like myself ( not yet, soon ).

i3 is a dual core with a theoretical 4 cores. (Hyper Threading )

i5 is a Quad core

i7 is a quad core with a theoretical 8 cores. ( Hyper Threading )
