Give your old PC a new life—Optimisation tips #1

Djole123

So, as you might know, I'm running an EeePC from 2012, which is really slow and sluggish. So, I found some ways to improve performance on these old and slow PC's.

1) Turn off Aero and all of it's elements

I know that Aero taskbar and widgets look cool, but they really decrease performance. Choose a Basic or Classic theme, or, if you're on Windows 8 or 10, choose a High Contrast one.

2) Turn off unnessecary programs from startup

You can improve startup speeds by disabling startup garbage.

On Windows 7, Vista and XP, press Windows key+R and type "msconfig". Go to Startup tab, and disable everything you don't need, like updates, games etc.

I don't reccomend disabling driver programs and antimalware/antivirus.

3) Improve browser experience

Now for most part, you will be doing 720p gaming... Excuse me? No? Ahh yes, web browsing.

The best combo for browsing is... Safari 5.0 and Flash Player 9.

Now you might arise with questions like:

Djole, but those things are obsolete!

Yes, they are, but they give best performance.

Djole, but these are just waste of disk space! I can just get Firefox or Chrome and get everything built in!

If you have a good computer, sure, but if you have a bad one, these old things will seriously improve browsing experience.

Djole, Flash Player is vulnerable to viruses!

That is totally correct, however, if you have a good antivirus, this shouldn't be a problem.

Djole, this doesn't work for me, you liar!

Find the best that suites you. Mix and match different browsers with different Flash versions to see what is the best for you.

That's it for Optimisation tips #1, if you want more like these, definitely tell me that in the reply!

Edit: I could have just said "install Linux", but you have to agree that most of people have no time or don't want to install Linux.

But Linux can be an option if Windows really sucks on your PC.

or install linux

I just put Ubuntu on my pretty slow i5 Laptop and it runs like a beast. If your laptop is even worse then mine go with a distro like Lubuntu, even better at resource management. Or if you have a laptop with a 128mb of ram you can go with DSL (Damn Small Linux), uses 50 mb of RAM. Lol.
