I'd try and go with something that actually has 4 cores if you plan to play any newer or more graphically intensive games. You won't even be able to boot some games with only a dual core CPU.

I'd try finding used components if you have a budget like that. eBay can be a great resource; my entire computer was basically free with the deal I got.

Also, is this tower only?

Try finding a used 2500k and mobo combo, I saw one a few days ago on ebay for about £120. Then do the rest of the build with whatever you have left. However I would also advise you to save up a bit more for a better system, £400 wont get you a system that will last for long, my budget build ended up being 1.5x over budget before I got something that I was happy with.

Needs money for car parts :P

System specs: Core i7 9700k, Dark Rock Pro 4 , MSI Z390 PRO, 16GB CORSAIR VENGENCE DDR4 3000, EVGA GTX 1070 FTW, Corsair AX860, Seagate 1TB, Sandisk 240GB SSD, Corsair 400c

My Steam Profile (from SteamDB)

  • Worth: £654 (£221 with sales)
  • Games owned: 62
  • Games played: 52 (83%)
  • Hours on record: 2,980.7h

be careful with ASRock boards, it seems like they are having issues with Steamroller CPUs and causes them to run at higher clocks/voltages then the CPU need to.

It applies to the A88X ITX board, and a few random mATX versions too. ASRock are avare, but doesnt seem to want to fix it.

From reports ive read around the web, it appears to be a BIOS issue with C-states in cooperation with a issue with the PWM management of the CPU-Fan. The end result is hotter VRMs, a stressed and throttling CPU coupled with noisy cooler. Hell, even a 240mm watercooler gets noisy even with noctua fans with low noise adapters.

DONT buy a dual core in 2016. It will hurt you.

Get a Intel i3, or if you cannot afford an i3, get a AMD Athlon x4 845. The 845 is like a more efficient Intel i5 2500k CPU in terms of stock performance. But it costs only 69 USD.
