32 bit windows 8 = get me out of this one guys!

Im procrastinating over this issue i have. This is what has occured:

  1. I knew i was building a new pc so took advantage of that windows 8 upgrade offer by downloading it through microsoft onto a blank usb 3 device
  2. When i came to install it all worked but it gave me 32 bit windows 8
  3. The PC i downloaded it on was running 32bit i think (it wasnt mine)
  4. How can i get 64 bit WITHOUT having to spend any more cash, or am i screwed?

Any help would be much appreciated. (I have a product key)

Perhaps you can call Microsoft and tell them you actually wanted 64bit? Other than that, you're screwed as far as I know.

When you downloaded it, you used the setup program, Correct?

If your previous Windows was not 64-bit, then the downloader cannot prepare your USB key to be 64-bit, as you need a 64-bit boot module. So it downloaded the 32-bit

Solution. Repeat the process on a 64-bit system. Ask friend or family member computer.

You can get the Setup Tool that you used here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=262204

If that is not possible:

Install the 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise Trial in a Virtual Machine, run the Setup Tool that you used (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=262204).

When it will ask you to make a USB key, or download the ISO. Select: ISO file.

You'll get the 64-bit version of Win8

Don't Windows Licenses work on either 32 or 64 bit? That's what I remember.  Just download the iso for 64 bit, install, and use your product key. There shouldn't be any problems.

Yes it does. But when you buy it online, you use a Windows setup program will download Windows 8, and give you the option if you want to prepare a USB flash drive, or ISO. Oh and it will check software and hardware compatibility with your system.

If you run a 32-bit Windows, it can't prepare a USB flash drive with 64-bit Windows, as the drive needs to have it's boot system setup in 64-bit. Else the CPU will go under 32-bit mode, and wont' understand 64-bit set of instructions.
