Of course, but AMD has plenty of experience with dual GPU and with the new API's supporting explicit multi-adapter, I think this time around the user experience will be improved over the 295x2. Still not as good as single GPU, but the performance will still be great.

With HBM, 4GB of vRAM is fine. Its not as effective as the on die cache of a Celeron when compared to a Pentium II with twice the off die cache (same perforamnce at the same clock speeds despite the Celeron having half the cache), but its a lot better than having 4GB GDDR5/GDDR5X.

And there will still be some issues and the fact that not all games have Crossfire profiles, and that some games don't even launch with them (or ones that work as they should).

I haven't had a single instance of ever exceeding the VRAM of my 970.  Anything that uses more VRAM than that, the GPU core is the limiting factor anyway.

Well, playing current gen games with a GPU 2 generations old, what do you expect.  VRAM usage has stagnated since Mordor and modded Skyrim, and any game that uses more than 4GB VRAM will be played at resolutions the 970 would have problems with anyway.

OMG they're going to get rekt. All AMD has to do is supply HBM2 on the step down GPU (aka the usual 'popular' price point of $500)

Well guess what, in 2 years your current GPU will be playing future games. Even if you're not the one using it. And how future-ready it is determines its resale value.

 

Not everyone is aimlessly consuming a new GPU every 9 months. I upgrade every year but the previous main system's GPU goes into my HTPC when I do. And 90% of gamers upgrade GPUs every 3 years.

Why would the GP100 cutdown use GDDR5 instead of HBM2? This implies that the GP100 should have two different memory controllers on the die, IMHO these numbers are just invented and thrown onto a chart

I assume you only play at 1080p then because once you push into 1440p and onto 4K things get very interesting.

 

Hitman can obliterate my Vram at 1440p very easily, as can The Division and ROTTR. I am pretty sure some of that can be attributed to bad optimisation on the part of the developers however because GTA V runs fairly well at 1440p and actually even runs OK at 4K on a GTX970 but the fact remains, 1080p is slowly but surely being replaced and it seems like Nvidia is poised to, yet again give us a mid range top tiered card which is optimal for 1080p and not 1440p.

What? The X80 has 1.5 times the Tflop output of the 980TI, its no where even close to "on par" with it, based on Tflops alone the X80 obliterates the 980Ti.

 

The worry about these cards is the shockingly bad amounts of RAM Nvidia decided to go with, 6GB of RAM on the X80 just isn't enough, it should have been at least 8GB.

AMD has already stated the Polaris cards they're coming out with this year won't be using HBM at all.

Yup, HBM2 is going to be for Vega, and their engineer said it would cost too much and isn't ready for mainstream users just yet ( in relation to Polaris using HBM2 ).

The other day I was talking about how 4GB VRAM on the Fury X2 was stupid because it had the processing power to run higher resolutions, but not the VRAM. Then someone showed me benchmarks of Crossfire 4GB Fury X cards performing the same as SLI 12GB Titan X cards on a 11,520x2160 setup in various games. Needless to say, I think 4GB will do you just fine for a while.
