Should I get a 390X or 980?

I'm leaning towards the 390X at the moment.

I'm neither at the moment. I've been looking at benchmarks of both and I can't decide.

Go for your heart, but the 390X is a little better, and the high-end 390X's are about the same performance as a 980. Ti.

No it's not. GPU selection actually impacts performance, unlike SSDs or peripherals.

Depends. Prolly the 390X

overall, generally, the 980 will out perform the 390X by a small amount, but the 390X is much cheaper.

Also if you've been paying attention to recent news, AMD GPUs have been slowly eking out more and more performance. With DX12 I wouldn't be surprised if the 390X beats out the 980. I'm sure there's benchmarks out there.

 

anyway, go with the 390X. If you plan on having this card for any amount of time, take into account the performance increase AMD is currently seeing with the use of async compute, albeit a immature technology.

Really? Do you have any benchmarks you can reference?

i know in dx12 this is probably true but if that's what your referring to you should state that.

The 290X is SIMILAR to an 390X, and it has a lot of OC headroom. Were you looking at a freaking 590X or something? (or listening to bull****). The 980 is worse than the 390, thanks to:

390X is normally cheaper and better value but the 980 is a bit better but not by to much...

Sapphire is generally considered the best, MSI and gigabyte are also good choices. Just stay away from the Asus AMD cards as they are a little worse performance wise do to being quieter, although not by much.

DONT GET GIGABYTE

 

they have had shitloads of BIOS issues with their 300 series cards. Their issues ranges from corrupt GPU bioses, to fans that are either phyiscally dead, or not running properly.

 

Also, this time around, ASUS cards are fast, but louder the usual

The Fury Nano is cheaper than the 980 and performs better iirc.

Aren't gigabyte 390X's voltage-locked? How about XFX?

Regular 980 vs 390X: 390X is around the same performance.

Regular 980 vs 290X: 10% (390X) vs 12% (290X).

I just got an MSI 390x from new egg. It was $400 with tax and shipping, and I still have a $20 rebate comming from MSI. So that puts the 390x at $380, out the door. So far the card has been working flawlessly for me. I haven't overclocked it....yet  and it works wonderfully. I think that the price to performance ratio puts the 390x in the winning position.

Eh. 980 has the clear advantage in Shadowplay and DirectX 11 titles while the 390X has far more DX12 headroom. Get an R9 Fury if you can.

What resolution are you playing at? How does it perform in games?

390X has the letter X on it, that must mean it is Sensei

980 has no X, this must mean that the 980 is the Student.

390x is a bit slower but alot cheaper

R9 fury same price as a 980 but faster
