Should I get a 390X or 980?

The 290X is SIMILAR to an 390X, and it has a lot of OC headroom. Were you looking at a freaking 590X or something? (or listening to bull****). The 980 is worse than the 390, thanks to:

VRAM

Variety of other stuff (Memory Bus, Memory), and one guy says that they are the same, but for some reason the 390X is a little better sometimes. SO 390X!

980 also runs cooler and more power efficient and I have always seen it do better in DX11. The OP doesn't need that extra VRAM on that 1080p 60Hz monitor.

What resolution are you playing at? How does it perform in games?

I don't have the greatest monitor for gaming. I'm using a 60hz 1080p ips monitor. I play my games @ 1440 scaled down to 1080. So basically I just set the resolution @ 1440 in the game's settings. I keep the frame rate locked @ 60fps, otherwise I get screen tearing due to my monitor only having a 60hz refresh rate. The screen tearing problem only occurs in some games (GTA V). The 390x holds 60fps effortlessly @ 1440. If i don't lock the fps I am able to consistently get over 144 fps.

Performance has been great. No dropped frames, or lagging. So far no problems to speak of.

I'm probably gonna get a 21:9 1440p monitor in the near future, as well a new PC build.

still 420$ for a 980

http://www.ebay.com/itm/301390857999?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

(relax, its newegg, and this isn't hot deals :P)

its ugly and probably louder than desired but slap a waterblock on that baby and no-one will ever know

If I didn't already have a 980 I would probably go 390 (not x) not worth the extra 70$ to me.  you could almost get 2x 390's for the price of 1x aftermarket 980

Watch for sales on both of those cards, retailers will be looking to unload some of them. Both of those cards are great and if the price is right....
