Apple users targeted in first known Mac ransomware campaign

Apple Inc customers were targeted by hackers over the weekend in the first campaign against Macintosh computers using a pernicious type of software known as ransomware, researchers with Palo Alto Networks Inc told Reuters on Sunday.
Ransomware, one of the fastest-growing types of cyber threats, encrypts data on infected machines, then typically asks users to pay ransoms in hard-to-trace digital currencies to get an electronic key so they can retrieve their data.
Security experts estimate that ransoms total hundreds of millions of dollars a year from such cyber criminals, who typically target users of Microsoft Corp's Windows operating system.

So, here is the thing. The "Macs can't get viruses" thing is becoming a dream. Sooner or later, its going to be that no computer can't get viruses. This is what every mac owner is saying:

An Apple representative said the company had taken steps over the weekend to prevent attacks by revoking a digital certificate from a legitimate Apple developer that enabled the rogue software to install on Macs. The representative said he could not immediately provide other details.
The malware is programmed to encrypt files on an infected personal computer three days after the original infection, according to Olson.
That means that if Apple's steps prove ineffective in neutralizing malware that has already infected Macs, the earliest victims will have their files encrypted on Monday, three days after the malicious program first appeared on the Tranmission website, he said.

Yes apple is doing stuff about it, but really. They aren't doing much if anything at all. Apple has to get into the mainstream. They can't just keep on doing this.

The project's website, www.transmissionbt.com, on Sunday carried a warning saying that version 2.90 of its Mac software had been infected with malware.
It advised users to immediately upgrade to version 2.91 of the software, which was available on its website, or delete the malicious one.

So the website doesn't look too official, but it looks good enough to someone who isn't paying attention.

Kinda makes me happy in all honesty. I mean yes, its bad for the sake of security and is bad timing with the FBI demanding a back door. But, now the snobby iFanboys lose like 50% of their argument since there's hard evidence of a somewhat typical virus attack on mac.

I wonder how easy it would be for someone like MalwareBytes to disassemble this kit to determine the encryption types, and perhaps a lot of information about the developers, if they weren't careful.

I love checking out MalwareBytes when they tear apart cryptolockers/randomwares.

To be fair, I haven't heard this argument from any reasonable Apple fanboy in quite some time.

What the hell is with all the people suddenly claiming that ransomeware has finally made it to macs?

Seriously, two fucking years ago I had to reinstall my grandfather's osx because he got ransomeware on it.

 

THIS ISN'T NEW FUCKING NEWS, MACS ARE JUST AN VULNERABLE AS PC'S. VIRUSES ARE JUST LESS COMMON FOR THEM AS THEY ONLY MAKE UP 1/10TH OF THE MARKET, WHERE AS PC'S MAKE UP ALMOST 9/10THS.

Linux get's no love.

Linux is also harder to mess up, because each installation can be different depending on how the user has it set up. Not to mention being easier to fix, and overall more secure (when run correctly)

I don't get it Ransome32 works on Linux which is UNIX and so is MacOSX so it works on it. What is the shocker?

The problem is the more that this industry plays into apple fanboyism, the worse it gets. If you knew it wasnt the first campaign then don't say it is, that only makes the whole "MACS DONT GET VIRUSES" fangay argument worse. And even if the original article calls it a first, you should know better and know that its most certainly NOT a first.

I only see this being said by people bashing Apple in YouTube comments or on 9gag. No one actually says they can't get viruses. They get less viruses due to there being less incentive to make viruses for Macs.

I have personally had a ton tell me they can't get a virus, but you are right that it isn't as big of a misconception as some think.

I also worked as an EasyTech technician at Staples, and had similar experiences. In fact, I would say that in my experience, most who went in shopping for a Mac would comment on the "fact" that Mac's can't get viruses.

 

I would correct them, but only 5% of the time would they listen to me. I suppose most of them thought it was a sales tactic to get them to buy a PC instead... Which makes no sense, since the higher price of a Mac looks better on my sales record then some shitty $400 HP laptop.

The US division of staples doesn't even sell Macs, and they didn't even have iPads until 18 months ago!

Yeah my local bestbuy set up there mini Apple Store about a year ago. Staples is still in the 2000's in slot of areas...
