i7 5820K/780 6GB vs i7 4790K/970 4GB thoughts

ShoshinUK

Hi All,

I am interested in the raw gaming performance (for stuff like Arma 3 and RUST) of the titled combinations. I will self build and take my time, I am happy using parts I pick up etc.

The main considerations (I think) are -

i7 5820K/780 6GB

CPU is hex core, bigger L3 cache
GPU has 2.5 (effective) more VRAM, wider Memory Bit Width and higher transfer bandwidth

4790K/970 4GB
CPU is faster
GPU is faster, better thermal performance, less power needed to run

I am leaning towards the i7 5820K/780 6GB combination, and overclock everything.

the GTX900 series has memory compression algorithms which allow it to use smaller bus bandwidth without performance bottlenecks

Both combinations should be able to exceed 60fps consistently at 1080p, and at 1440p you'll probably still not notice too much of a difference unless you're eyeing an FPS counter like it's counting down your life.

Wife's build: Amethyst - Ryzen 9 3900X, 32GB G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200, ASUS Prime X570-P, EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 12GB, Corsair Obsidian 750D, Corsair RM1000 (yellow label)

My build: Mira - Ryzen 7 3700X, 32GB EVGA DDR4-3200, ASUS Prime X470-PRO, EVGA RTX 3070 XC3, beQuiet Dark Base 900, EVGA 1000 G6

Thanks for that but the 970's 'effective' memory transfer is 224 GB/s, the 780 is 288 GB/s which is a significant difference (I think).

Also whats the real world impact of having 2.5 GB more VRAM, Arma eats it using MSI afterburner shows me Arma will use up to 6GB VRAM on our server!

4790k and a 980ti is best for 60fps arma 3

I am (re FPS) but I understand Arma's limits much better these days, but in other games if 120fps on max settings is achievable I want to game at that rate.

Yes of course, but I am not asking about that combination (but will likely end up with it..........LOL)

2600k will work and just put everything else into a 980ti. call it a day. It seems impractical but luke uses it just fine and the skylake are only about 15-20% better. you could probably get it on craigslist with mobo for under 200

ok, so now i'm considering the 2600K vs 4790K and 780 6GB as the 'right' combination for me..................
