Google to pay £130mil in back taxes after an audit by the UK tax authorities

Tax inquiry
HMRC acted after controversy over the low level of taxes paid by big companies that operate in the UK but have headquarters abroad.
Despite the UK being one of Google's biggest markets, it paid £20.4m in taxes in 2013. The value of its sales in Britain that year was £3.8bn. Google makes most of its UK profits through online advertising here.
The company has been criticised for its complex international tax structures.
Its European headquarters are in Ireland, which has a lower corporation tax rate than the UK.
It has also used company structures in Bermuda - where the corporation tax rate is zero - to shelter profits.
Such moves are legal and Google - a US business, which pays the majority of its taxes there - says it has abided by international tax rules.
 
Accounting change
The firm has now agreed to change its accounting system so that a higher proportion of sales activity is registered in Britain rather than Ireland.
It has pledged to pay more tax on those sales in the future.
It has also said that it will use a different structure to account for its profits in the UK from 2005 until 2015.
"We are paying £130m in respect of previous years when the rules were to pay in respect of profits you make in a country and then going forward we will also be paying in respect of sales to UK customers," Mr Brittin said.

Google is but one of the several multinational companies in UK that avoided paying taxes, in spite of making billions in profits
 
after the news broke, some of UK's political figures are not happy; they say, quote: "a small amount of money [for Google]" - Meg Hillier, chair of the Commons Public Accounts Committee

 

"HMRC seems to have settled for a relatively small amount in comparison with the overall profits that are made by the company in this country. And some of the independent analysts have argued that it should be at least 10 times this amount" - Mr McDonnell, Labor Party

 

while others call it "vindication"

So that was 10 years of back taxes? So they paid and additional 12 million per year. So they still paid basically nil.

About that avoiding taxes. Small companies are starting to use the same loophole as the big boys like amazon.

And it's still spreading. So the UK has 2 options.

Close the loophole, or let everyone use it.

The odd thing I find about our (UK) Government is this, they will spend £10K to get you to pay £100 in taxes. It's insane.

 

But yeah, these companies should have been forced to pay it back long ago, and I think a heavy interest should be added on top now IMO.

I wish Google and Apple would pay their taxes here in Ireland the greedy rotten bas****ds. I never understand mega rich companies not paying tax when they can clearly afford it while the hard working Joe soap gets scrutinized if he misses his tax return.

 

I blame the governments for not stepping up and putting a stop to this tax evasion.

Glad to see HMRC finaly make google pay tax owed, but I feel like it should have been a lot more, as 130M is nothing for google.

It's funny there tax rate in the US is similar to 2.4% which is BS, I don't think the corporate tax rate should be 39% as that seems steep, but we should remove loop holes so it can't be exploited to 2.4%.
