Earlier on Thursday Apple CEO Tim Cook attended a private meeting in Brussels with Margrethe Vestager, the head of the European Commission's antitrust efforts, presumably in an attempt to diminish the chances of owing billions in back taxes because of the company's Irish tax deals.

 

The matter also has high stakes, as Apple could theoretically owe over $8 billion, and Irish political parties are split on the matter.

 

A ruling could be issued as soon as March, but the investigation is already on a delayed schedule and information gathering is still said to be ongoing

 

My comment : Soon or later , companies are going to have a bad time moving to places.

Of course they can  afford it. If your local coffee shop is paying their taxes why should the most valuable company in the world run away from them. I'm pretty sure they will find a way to lobby up and not pay as it is much cheaper to pay lawyers then give 8 billion

I wonder when companies will start just straight up telling governments what to do and how things are going to work.  We are getting close enough that companies are getting big enough and have enough sway with public demand and perception that they could force massive change.

why don't governments send bailiffs to the regional HQs to so they have to pay up or have assets seized, as if they do it for private citizens, what's actually stopping from doing it to businesses.

To be fair to apple, they're using existing law (riddled with loopholes, albeit) to legally avoid having to pay tax

 

Apple aren't the only culprits though Google, Microsoft etc all do it as well (pretty much any worldwide technology company that has headquarters in Dublin will be doing it for tax reasons)

I more of meant when they stopped putting up the façade, and just straight up tell the gov't no, publicly.  Or tell the gov't that a law will be changed or else.  Like if Intel or someone threatened to just bring all their best tech to China or Russia or something.  Or if they just say that they aren't going to sell item X, or won't stop selling item X.

I'm fairly certain when we have a world government and the destruction of individual countries - it'll be run by a company. "Apple.  Your New World Order."

lots of politicians say that if we crack down on those companies they will stop selling their products in the country but i think that is complete BS because then instead of loosing what ever percent they have to pay for tax they loose 100% of the revenue for that country
