Sennheiser HD 598 Member Review- It's ugly But it Works

Vivilacqua1

Alright, lets start this off by admitting that I took the "It's ugly but it works" from a Noctua cooler review. The truth is, I love the look of these headphones, from the premium feeling ear pads, to the Noctua-esque color style.

Priced on most sites at around $300, they seem to always be "on sale" at half that, wich I would say is great for the quality sound these spit out, there's also the fact that they feel very comfortable. I would go as far as to say that they even feel more comfortable to wear over wearing nothing. Comparing these to the Sony MDR-1A headphones that @connorpiper let my try out, these feel much lighter and a little bit more comfortable around the ears, especially if your ears are rather on the Dumbo elephant side.

post-123438-0-18205300-1452999751.jpg
Now, because these are open backed, you do get quite alot of sound bleed, and are able to hear everything around you when listening to music at a low volume, so wearing these in public isn't the best of ideasIt's best to listen to them in a quiet room where nobody can criticize tour choice of music (Thanks mom.)
Now, I guess this is the part you all read this for, sound quality. Omfg, so much better than those shitty Razer Krakens I used to have ad my daily driver, buy you already knew that. These 598's have a nice boomy, but not overpowering bass, nice clear mids, and pretty crisp highs. They do have the "Sennheiser sound curve" wich drips off the highs, but I find that kinda nice as my ears don't feel shattered after afew hours of listening. Again compared to @connorpiper 's Sony MDR- 1A's, I would say that they feel more open and clear. "Hotel California" by The Eagles was ny comparison song, but was only able to try them out for one song
.
Now are my complaints; The cable is too long, and is a bit unmanageable, and the adapter for the 1/4" to 3.5mm jack is not good for mobile use as there have been acouple times where I have almost ripped them out of my phone. Other than that however, I feel that the headphones would be great for anybody who would use them at home on their computer or playing games.
9/10- ign, too much cable

As this is my first review, please give feedback and all that stuff!

Good review. There's the "Special Edition" of these exact headphones. Only difference is it's black

No I would never be racist. I'm simply showing the OP of the review if he was looking for a different color scheme, and this is the one.

I would also point out that the 558 is very similar and less money. Those looking for the ultimate value should consider it over the 598.

Or wait for the 598 SE to go on sale again, my brother picked them up for £75 on Amazon.

The SE version comes with a second, shorter 1.2m cable with 3.5mm plug. Also there are tons of aftermarket cables available with different length.

Got the SE version last Christmas from Amazon. Can't pass such good deal. The best headphones under $100. :)

No I was making a joke about how the special edition Sennheisers are black. Sorry for the confusion.

Um yes. The 518 is soundstage-compromised and overly warm. The 558 is neutralish goodness.

I do with my 518s  B)

@SSL the 558's are worth the $30 over the 518's, but the difference isn't really that big

The 518's still have a pretty broad soundstage

No one said it was huge. For $30 it wouldn't be. But, you get more open sound and better pad material. Sounds like a win to me.
