Interesting article that raises good points as to why Microsoft might extend the free offer on Windows 10 ... apparently adoption rates have fallen behind Windows 7 (there was less PCs back then and it was never free).

It won't even be any more expensive than the other Windows versions.. I mean come on.. Look at how much the OEM versions are going for right now. They aren't anymore expensive than previous versions.

To be fair there was more reason to upgrade to W7 because (discounting Vista for obvious reasons) the gap between XP and W7 was 8 years which made for a fairly substantial difference, going from W7 to W8 and W10 while bringing changes and improvements isn't as substantial of a move and thus isn't as attractive/important, personally I think the fact W10 has even close to the adoption rate of W7 is fairly impressive.

You can be sure they'll see an installation spike shortly before the offer runs out too as a lot of people will just be giving it the typical 6-12 month windows break in period

Windows 10 isn't free, as MS are making money off of a person each day that a person uses it, through their collection of data (which MS sells to advertisers and other groups), targets ads, and Windows Store commission. That's why Windows 10 is so invasive and determined in its data collection. And also why MS have tried to retroactively apply telemetry to Windows 7 and 8 user (though it can be prevented in Windows 7 and 8). Windows 10 is designed as a perpetual spyware / adware-based OS.

OEM will always be cheaper than retail. Retail edition comes with both 32bit and 64bit, as well as a keycard. The OEM comes with a tiny sticker where you will need a magnifier just to read it.
