Tech that you think will go extinct soon (Discussion)

Gandek

DVDs are on the way out in favor of Blu Rays. However I don't think we'll see the death of physical media until internet speeds become fast enough to stream higher bit rates (which is the reason a 1080p Blu Ray can look better than 4k streamed media).

Funny enough with the monitor situation I will likely never go to 4k as I can't tell the difference without putting my face uncomfortably close to a screen, but yes 768 is on it's way out

I agree that for some people its not worth it. I don't know about your situation but for a lot of people with not great vision a bigger screen beats a higher resolution one, as it makes stuff clearer. For me though my next monitor will either be 144Hz or at least 1440p.

Mp3/mp4 players. What's the point when you can do the same with your phone?

HDDs. SSDs will soon rule the world.

data centers still use tape for long term data storage, simply because for the time being you can't store 170tb in a hdd whereas a similarly sized tape based storage unit can.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

A standalone MP3 player can be nice to have in a place where you can't take camera cell phones.

can't think of many situations like that, but fair enough - still a pretty niche usage

Is Blu-Ray a thing still?

Yes, its still a thing, and quite popular. Blu-ray is currently winning the optical disk format war by a landslide. I don't see anything replacing it until they start selling movies on flash drives.

Tell that to people who buy and use DAP's.

oh you did ..me :)

My FiiO X3K walks all over phones when it comes to sound quality, assuming u have a good pair of IEM's with it. I even use it in DAP mode for my desktop PC when I stick my headphones on at night.

ok so technically the X3K is a DAP, not a MP3 player ..but so many people consider them in the same category ..so..yea.

From having a 1080p, 1440p, and a 900p monitor all next to each other, I can tell a big difference between the 1440p and the others.

There would still be hdd with massive storage like 1 petrebyte at around 2050

There are many secure facilities which you cannot bring a camera into. So your options are either permanently disable the camera by drilling it out, or not bringing it in.

Seems that unless tablets get better with multitasking and physical keyboards become a standard, they are going to go extinct soon. Phones are getting bigger, and convertibles are getting more portable.

it's not that I was wondering about, but rather, who listens to music there?

Extinct like VHS tapes basically. My opinion: TV will go extinct but not for a good while, i don't see this generation watching much TV, we just like to watch shows online on our PCs and mobile devices.

Next i think the traditional laptop will also go extinct soon, I see alternatives like the Surface taking over. My parents use a regular laptop and i don't like using it at all. Every track pad i used is annoying, having a touchscreen and detachable keyboard is really nice.

RCA will go ded

Someone who works in a secure office for example. Can be nice to have your own library of music than just be limited to Pandora.

Dedicated basic/scientific calculators

Those will always exist because you can't let people use a phone in an exam. They've been extinct for people in "real life" for a while, and just get bought by students to sit exams.

But in the future people will just go straight from no calculator to graphing calculator and just use graphing calculators in the 99% of exams that let people use them.

But they won't be allowed to. What's the point of asking "find the root of this graph" questions in a GCSE maths paper if your students have graphical calculators than can solve graphs for them? You aren't allowed a calculator on a lot of primary school papers (SATs), then you're only allowed a scientific calculator in some exams for GCSE, and then a graphical at A level, but even then you aren't allowed some specific types. Scientific calculators won't cease to exist until exams are overhauled, which won't happen any time soon because politics is always slow.

If you are in an office chances are you have a laptop with you - or just a pendrive that you can plug in your work computer.

with SSDs getting cheaper I think boot drives will probably start dying off, as 1 TB SSDs get down under $200 the performance starts to make full SSD systems way more attractive for personal builds. The price per gb on HDDs is too good to pass up for really big drives like 4-8 terabytes for datacenters and stuff but you don't need that much for a personal rig

Apple devices. Google and Microsoft are pulling more and more of Apple's customers each year, and the Apple craze will die out eventually.

Seriously though... I have a few.

-I know it's "cliche," but physical media. Movies/music/games on disc will cease to exist. Music faster than all else.

-Consoles (as we know them). I'm guessing that there will be, for the foreseeable future, boxes that hook-up or connect to a tv to play games, but consoles in their current state will cease to exist, probably in the next generation or two.

-SD cards? Just throwing this one out there, I don't know many people who still use them. I think they are still popular with photography though.
