What makes a processor good or bad?

Hello!

After looking so hard for an hour in the interwebs, I still can't find the answer. I'm trying to avoid the megahertz myth as much as possible. I heard that it's all about the instructions per clock that makes a processor faster. I assume that the clock is the GHz thing. How do I even know how many instructions per clock a processor does? I can't seem to find it in the specs.

It's all based on how good they are (weird response I know) but that's really all there is too it, look for benchmarks, reviews, ect. What can be helpful though is understanding things in a familly. If you're looking at say intel hashwell chips, within that family you actually can use some less preferred ways of telling which is better. clock speed, # of cores, cache, ect.

 

Generally speaking though, not to be playing sides just going through this spiel, Intel chips are better and more expensive, amd is cheaper but still a good option.

AMD does this a lot and if you talk to a person at Best Buy you will get an answer like, AMD has more cores and it clocks at 4ghz stock so it it better. That is not the case at all. There are many factors, for example. The size of the dye. Intel has 14nm and below while AMD has 32nm on the 6300 and more. You also have architecture. If it is a newer one it will be more efficient more powerful and hopefully less heat output. You also have the other things like number of cores and core speed. You can have a fast engine but you need the rest of the car to win

Hello!

After looking so hard for an hour in the interwebs, I still can't find the answer. I'm trying to avoid the megahertz myth as much as possible. I heard that it's all about the instructions per clock that makes a processor faster. I assume that the clock is the GHz thing. How do I even know how many instructions per clock a processor does? I can't seem to find it in the specs.

The jist of it is this: for servers, rendering tasks, and other niche scenarios like that, you want a CPU with as many cores as possible. For gaming and general use, clockspeed and instructions per clock go hand in hand for providing good performance. There are certain math calculations you can do, I think, to determine instructions per clock, and even a program called QEMU(though I don't know how to use it) in which you can enter data about a CPU in order to determine certain performance characteristics.

 

But if you're not interested in doing that, the general rule of thumb is that Intel's CPUs have moderately high clockspeeds and fantastic IPC, and AMD's CPUs have somewhat higher clockspeeds and terrible IPC, which makes them less ideal for gaming. However, modern games are beginning to use multiple CPU cores more effectively, reducing the strain on a single core, and that helps AMD CPUs somewhat, but they can still have low minimum framerates because of a limitation of DirectX11. DirectX12 games will be coming out soon, which will presumably fix that and hopefully even the odds between AMD and Intel by a fair amount, but Intel's CPUs will always be ideal compared to AMD's current offerings. That may change with AMD's new architecture that will be released in late 2016, but even with their projected performance increase they will only compete in IPC with Haswell(Intel's 4th gen. CPUs), while Intel has already released Skylake(6th gen.), and will have another ready sometime next year.

instead of looking at specs, look up benchmarks and games that compare the CPUs

CPUs can be good at different things, so depending on what you need your CPU for and how much money you have you will get one CPU or another

the FX9590 is 8 core 4,7Ghz CPU but its NOT a good CPU

Heat and power issues only for a mediocre gaming experience.

 

Intel i5 is the way to go (for now) for gaming.

 

and if you are in the intel i5 camp THAN higher numbers are better

Well... not really. It depends on what you compare.

A CPU from the same generation/manufacturing process (so e.g. Skylake by Intel) can be compared to another of that generation. More or less. There's some differences, like hyperthreading and cache, but in general you can do that. If you compare over generations, it will kinda work as long as it's just one or maybe two.

 

However, comparing AMD and Intel CPUs is very tricky and the only way is looking up benchmarks. 

 

 

I don't know what I'm going to use it for, really. Light gaming, able to handle 30+ tabs in Firefox, stuff like that.

Can you define 'light gaming'? The tabs will really depend a lot more on the RAM you have (my Atom tablet can handle tabs pretty much fine, any desktop CPU will have no problem), i.e. the more RAM, the more tabs you can have open. 

Maybe take a look at Linus' recent buyers' guide. If you can't define what you'll use it for, it's tricky, so... maybe it's just good to get into the game, even if it means slightly regretting your buy. But as for light gaming, that'll be fine with most stuff I think, and your GPU will be more important anyway.

Between the same type of CPU, yes, but if you were comparing something like an FX 9590 and an i7 4790K, one might get the idea that the 9590 is superior when it actually isn't.

 

If though you were comparing a Core i7 4770K vs a Core i7 4790K, then the 4790K is going to be superior. Same generation, but the 4790K has higher clocks out of the box.

I would say something that ages well. Take a Q6600 for example, having been a Quad Core and a noticeable improvement in performance from previous architectures (Netbust) allowed it to age well and still be a very capable processor to this day. Another great example it the Phenom II x6 for similar reasons and mainly due to high core count.

in terms of performance it goes:
IPC > clock frequency > core/thread count > instruction sets > socket lifespan

After reading a little bit more, I think that it's the IPS (instructions per second) that makes a CPU good.

Can you guys verify?

On a basic level, that is true. Instructions per cycle(IPC) multiplied by cycles per second(frequency) by the number of cores will give you instructions per second, and those three metrics are generally what determine performance on benchmarks, and that's what people generally go by. Of course, like @Prysin mentioned, instruction sets can also make a difference in performance(although by a smaller amount) since they allow a CPU to execute certain tasks more efficiently.

 

It can get more complex because not all games can utilize every core effectively, which on certain CPUs, as I mentioned before, can result in sub-par performance. Said CPUs may experience framedrops and stuttering in games, although that has become more rare over the past few years.

 

On a further note, any calculated instructions per second is going to be a best-case scenario, so there's no guarantee that a CPU will reach that performance.

How "good" it is, depends on what are you planing to do with it.

An i3 is good for your average internet browsing, is not good if you want to render 4K UHD video, an i5 would be better.

 

It all depends on the type of work you want to do.

GHZ do matter. But not as much as people say they do. An overclocked CPU will perform better than it would if it wasn't overclocked. However, we're talking about from say, 3.5 GHZ overclocked to 4.4. However, looking at a CPU with a clock of 3.5 GHZ w/ 2 Cores vs a CPU clocked to 3.4 GHZ  w/ 2 Cores won't make a massive difference, there are other factors that make a CPU "Good."  

 

Different processors are better for other workloads when compared to others, so when planning to build a new PC, it's always good to just ask the forum and tell us what the PC will be for, the experienced among us will point you in the right direction.
