Microsoft Phones Still losing money despite new devices :(

AlTech

Despite Microsoft's new CEO change and their new mobile strategy of releasing few phones per year, Microsoft has lost 54% phone sales over the last few months.

This is probably due to a whole load of flagships announced within the last few months, including but not limited to: iPhone 6s, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Galaxy Note 5 and  galaxy S6 edge plus.

This is really interesting because in Asia they're starting to become popular and expanding but they're losing market share elsewhere.  I know a few friends IRL who used to own windows phones but left to android because of the app gap.

To be fair, Microsoft didn't really  impress anyone with the Lumia 550 (It should not exist IMO) and the 950 and 950XL was announced 2 weeks ago. In the long term I do believe Microsoft will recover but in the short term Microsoft will lose some money.

What a shame. The nearly 8000 people fired from the Lumia Division didn't help too much with regard to Microsoft's bottom line.

OP = http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/22/microsoft-phone-sales-fall/

Personally I'm about disappointed and a little bit sad to see them completely missing the mark and fail to be profitable. Leave a comment below on your thoughts and feelings!

Nah. We're talking 5 million less Lumias sold this year compared to 9.3 million last year.

These results and the -54% are only from July, August and September, not the entire last year.

Microsoft only got themselves to blame. They got themselves into this situation with stupid decisions. At this point I give Windows Phone as much of a chance succeeding as GNU/Linux on desktops.

It's shit... Sorry but it really is. If you like it then great, but it has very very few benefits compared to the alternatives and a huge amount of drawbacks. The most noticeable and dealbreaking one being the awful app store which is pretty much dead and filled with scam apps. The less noticeable yet huge drawback is the lack of a lot of features and freedom for the developers.

If only windows phones had these 2 below!  :P , windows phones lack entertainment :(, for productivity ill use my "desktop" all the time even if they can transform into a "small and not so strong computer", people still need to buy the special dock, so yeah :/ the new lumias specs are beastly but the os is lame :D..... as it has been...

I was thinking to get the Lumia 950 but then i realize that. There isn't those apps for Lumia what i need. Also little bit terrified the freedom of data spying on Lumia device's. I know, i know it happen's also on Android on some brand phones. But that is still the main worry. Also didn't like the price of the 950.

Maybe it's because, in the last year, they haven't said a single thing about WP. This year should ramp up thanks to Windows 10 mobile and the new devices that'll go with it.

Don't worry dude! Google Spies on you more than Microsoft! And what apps are you missing?

Everything i need except a few apps are on WP.

Apps/things I'm missing: Snapchat, A transport app for my local area, Octopus and Octopus sim support (in my country we use a payment system called OCtopus it's essentially like an oyster card) and Youtube.

Maybe it's because, in the last year, they haven't said a single thing about WP. This year should ramp up thanks to Windows 10 mobile and the new devices that'll go with it.

They talked a whole lot about it at Build 2015 and Build 2014! They demoed an Alpha or beta version of Continuum and some of the other stuff like edge. But recently windows phone gets improved directly based on feedback using Microsoft's Windows 10 Mobile Preview "Feedback" app. There is also a feedback area in Windows Phone 8.1 in the settings menu but it's really well hidden.

I don't think the point of windows phone is to make money, more so to get people into there eco system and earn money from other things. If Microsoft wanted money they wouldn't limit there phones to one carrier in the USA lol.

How did they do that?

Cricket wireless work on WP, so does Verizon on specific models, so does AT & T.

And by the way recently Microsoft went to phone carriers and said F U to them.

I think they're just trying to make WIndows 10 Mobile better for people who use it rather than trying to make money or increase user base.

How much you got? The 930 is still available for $300 USD.

IF not then there's the Lumia 1520, 640XL, 640.

I agree the Lumia 950 is damn expensive for a windows phone. But remember, It's microsoft, you don't have to pay much to have a good experience. I wrote a review on the 640XL if you want to check that out. A lot cheaper :)

Again. What apps you missing?

Not him but here are some apps I use that are missing on Windows Phone:

  • Alternative browsers (not just IE reskins)
  • Anki (a proper app, not just an app that opens the browser version)
  • A good file Explorer (the ones I have found are nowhere near for example ES File Explorer in terms of features and design)
  • An app for my bank (Nordea)
  • Swish (there is an app for it but it's plagued with issues)
  • Atarashii (or any good MAL app. The ones in the WP store are terrible)
  • Prisjakt (the one in the store has been abandoned and does not work anymore)
  • AirDroid
  • A good video player. To be fair, I haven't looked through all of them and since I no longer have a WP device I can't do it either. But please bear in mind that I am very picky when it comes to video players, and use fairly obscure formats like heavily styled soft-subs, 10bit HEVC and H.264. I use MX Player on Android and there is a Windows Phone version, but it seems far inferior to the Android version.
  • TV.nu (Again there is an app for it but it got a terrible rating and as it turns out, it's just a wrapper for the website, not an actual native app)
  • SwiftKey
  • RCCDroid or any app that lets me plug my phone into my DSLR and control it.
  • Vessel
  • Fallout Shelter
  • Hearthstone
  • Wolfram Alpha
  • WiFi Analyser

Then we got all the Google stuff like:

  • Google Drive
  • Google Maps
  • Google Music
  • YouTube
  • Google Keep

On top of that I would still need to use Android on my tablet since Windows tablets are God awful for the things I use my tablet for.

And before you start linking me to apps that almost does what I want, please bear in mind that I will ignore apps you suggest that are inferior to the ones I am already using on Android. The apps I use as replacements needs to be as good or better than the ones I am already using. Otherwise there is no point in spending the time and money changing platform.

UM? Here are Google replacements (And what they replace):

Onedrive (Google Drive)

Metro Tube - Costs $1 or $2 but it's better than stock youtueb desktop (Youtube)

Spotify/Pandora/Beats Music (Google Music)

GMAPs+/Here Maps/Here Drive+ (Google Maps)

For a video player there's VLC

Browser - Opera Mini

TBH I never use a third of what you listed.

There's probably an unofficial version of it but again it might be really low quality.
