6 cores vs 4 cores for programming?

Hello, and thanks for reading this already!

 

I can get a 5820K instead of a 4790K for 100 more. Should I do it for programming with things like C#, HTML, Javascript etc?

Programing can be done on a toaster or literally a calculator so go with the cheaper option if that's your only concern

4790k is already a overkill you could code with a 30$ celeron

You don't need more than 1 core for programming, but u do need more to run your application smoothly.

For your needs 4 cores will be enough.

You don't need a powerful CPU for that. If you want a good multithreaded CPU for less, go for the Xeon E3-1231v3 and save yourself money for 1. aftermarket cooler that you would need to overclock 4790k and 2. cheaper motherboard cause you don't need Z97 chipset for a Xeon, B85/H81/H97 are better.

In all seriousness, you don't need a good cpu for programming unless you really know what you're doing and are actually hammering your cpu hard.

you dont need much power for coding but for other stuff like rendering and physics and more it will benifit from more cores, thats the reason why @valdyrgramr got an amd 9000 series over an i5(for the same price i believe)

the biggest thing i have takes a good minute or two to compile, and another minute or so to load up.

I assume he is worried about compiling, not just writing code.... lol. If the program is multithreaded the more cores would help, but I bet it wouldn't make any real difference. A 4790k is pretty damn fast.

@Stijncat programming can be done on anything, it's just text editing. My dual core AMD CPU can handle it

it's about what programs will be ran to test the stuff. Google Chrome for websites or something will be ez pz, but game engines are a different story.

Yeah true, but both those cpu's are pretty beastly, and the difference between compile times of those 2 cpus will be negligible

well.. it'll be 30% shorter on 6 cores, than it'd be on 4 cores. (if we use equal cores, just scratching out variables here)

 

should we care? no. its not worth the dollah bills if you're not compiling hundreds of megabytes of code...

That's already overkill for coding. I used to code HTML on an old single-core 2.6GHz celeron before I got my new laptop. Imo coding can be done on a 1 or 2 core system unless you're building a game that actually requires the performance given by the system you're coding with. Compile times are ridiculously fast, in most cases a fraction of a second using Visual Studio (c#).

I personally would go 6 cores. It makes things much more productive when working on large projects where compile times can get lengthy.
