2 Gamers, 1 CPU - Virtualized Gaming Build Log

Hi,

I watched this video and really liked it. I found it so useful that I decided to write down the steps into a markdown document (fancy plaintext-file) and also the pdf conversion of it. Really useful to have the steps in writing while you trying to follow the video or cant watch the video comfortably, since your main rig is just beeing built.

I would love to hear if somebody found this to be useful, or if you find anything wrong in it.

I hope more videos like this come out, maybe this time with a more focus on a slightly smaller budget?

Hey guys I'm getting ready to try a VM build. I have several questions and I'm hoping someone here can provide me with direction.

1) Without a network card, will another user and I take a hit on connection speed during online gaming using the Ethernet port on the motherboard?

2) Is a network card necessary to achieve normal online play with two users?

3) Could I arrange for a usb hub to be assigned to one VM, then plug and play usb devices into the hub, without having to assign each device in Limetech?

I appreciate any guidance. Thanks again

I have a few questions about what hardware to use here, first off im currently running i5 6600k with gtx 980 8GB Ram 750 watt psu.

First question would the i5 6600k be powerful enough to handle a virtual machine with a 980 and possibly 970.

Second, i am uncertain on the unraid setup, would i need to get another ssd and hdd, for my setup  i already have one of each, Linus mentioned formatting drives during the windows 10 install would i need to get all new drives or still be able to use my 2TB hdd and 250gb SSD without wiping them or reinstalling windows 10 on my current ssd.

Thanks for your help

Yes the i5 is powerful

I think get a new HDD

You really need a 6-8 core CPU to do this. Otherwise you will end up with 2 dual core machines and don't forget something has to handle unraid too so you'll lose a thread there.

The only budget way to do this would be a Ryzen 1700 build.

The comment above yours about a 6600k being enough is completely wrong and an example of a bad necro. However the ones above that are legitimate responses and the video is still largely relevant/not outdated so I think its fine for people to still be referring to this thread and the video.

R7 1700 would be fine then you would have 4c/8threads for each gamer

I was more thinking of the Hyper-V role in Windows Server. Wasn't fully aware that Microsoft released an actual Windows Server Hyper-V edition that was free, thanks for the heads up on that one. I deal mostly with VMware for my day job so I'm not a huge expert in the goings on with Hyper-V and my home servers are also VMware.

Guess the only down side to the RemoteFX setup would be the requirement of client devices compared to unRAID which you plug directly in to, could also be a positive too.

I'm using VMware Workstation Pro 14 with a win 10 vm and fortnite/ ue4 games crash on it, csgo cannot be run, but other games like rocket league and team fortress run flawlessly. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations in order to remedy some of these problems since you work with the vmware stuff? wow, what a project.

I also asked this question on the youtube page unfortunatly I didn't receive any reactions:

Is it possible to do this project the other way around?

In other words, 2 motherboards, 1 gamer.

I'd like to combine the performance of server and client components to get the best performance possible.

To connect the 2 pc's I think of using a thunderbolt PCIe card. (If I can rather use other interfaces then thunderbolt feel free to make a suggestion).

Does anyone know how to build something like this?

So, I'm a little late to the party, but I have an ESXi host at home that does file server/media server/dns etc. duty and I'm running out of space on it and am looking to the future for setting up a RAID for this machine and unRAID came to mind. My partner and I have been talking about ascending to the PCMR and then I remembered this video. It's a few years later and both of us game in 4k. I know that there's the advice of using different components for the two virtual machines, but realistically, we're both going to want to be running the best video card possible... is the advice of different components just to make it easier to assign different components to different VMs, or is there actually anything that would require us to use two different video cards?

you need 2 seperate GPUs for different workstation setups, and Unraid is pretty-much dirt cheap

To expand on arbyyyyh's question:

Could this be (for example): 2 gpu's from the same "family" or do they really have to be different?

As in:
"Asus 1080ti AA edition" + "Asus1080ti BB edition" = same brand, same gpu, different board

Asus 1080ti + XFX1080ti = same gpu, different brand
Asus 1080ti + Asus1080 = same brand, different gpu

Asus 1080ti + Asus1070ti = same brand. bigger difference gpu

Asus 1080ti + XFX1070 ti = everything different.

Currently in the very early planning stages of doing almost exactly the build from the video, so me and my partner can work off one pc. Just want this to be 100% clear. :)

I'd like to keep the gpu-cards as similar as possible, for aesthetics sake.

Thanks in advance.

you can have any combination of GPU make(amd/nvdia,etc) models(RTx/GTX/vega,etc) and brands(msi, asus.etc) BUT if u get 2 of the same, you'll be able to SLi later if u decide to convert to a solo PC down the line

side tip, if your going for a dedicated 2 user 1 pc i highly recommend getting 2 boot drives ( not partitioning one disk) and if u can get a server motherboard with 2 CPU sockets, makes it a breeze so each person gets a dedicated CPU....IF its low usage then 1 CPU should be fine, but still get 2 drives
