ahhh son got tired of watching dad playing on his sim, so had to "crap" something together for him, an old driving force logitech wheel i got for 80Dkk (12 bucks) and som wood leftovers, not the prettiest thing, but he loves it.

now i am just waiting for the getting permission to moving his pc and "rig" to his room. but it is fine he has his own small corner in the kitchen.

I didn't know they made desks that small.

Scratch that, pivoted again because it's not feasible to find a flat faced steering wheel that's reasonably priced.

I can't for the life of me fathom why steering wheels are so damn expensive. Would be better to make my own.

Everything progressing well except for the actual grips, which I presume will resemble more coffee crisp bars than svelte italian hand grips, but oh well.

It would be a lot easier to start with a thick aluminum plate agreed, but not everyone has easy access to a laser cutter so Im making do. Maybe in the future when I circle back, but for now a fully enclosed box is sufficient. I had printed his GT wheel prior and it seems to be holding up well.

Unless youre talking about the grips, in which case it wouldn't be a good time because they attach at different points.

I was talking about the grips. If you want an aluminum plate it's pretty easy to get some spray glue and print out a diagram. Then you can just use some drill bits and a hack saw or a dremel.

it is not a IKEA stock desk, it is the cheap IKEA top, + the low "wall hanging" modules and some stands from another IKEA thing, so it is a "IKEA mashup desk" extremly cheap, since the table top is really inexpensive... and actually really durable. weighs nothing, so "prettied" up cardboard, but that is okay for him.

Out of fuel, jeez, you weren't kidding, lol. I had a bout 18L over the line, so over-estimated a bit, but I always do, just to be safe.

Good race none-the-less. We run that game every Thursday, same time. Sounds like the admins are working on setting up an official season for ACC. Hope you can join us again. :)

Yeah, Laguna is definitely not my forte either. Getting on pole was luck due to the bit of rain that crept in during quali. And finishing 3rd I credit to not making any major mistakes and just surviving. The guys that finished 1-2 are two of the best aliens - I mean... "drivers" we have. ;)

I've been working on my car a lot during quarantine, and while that's been going on I decided to get back into sim racing. I finally found a way to properly secure my pedal set to the floor so it wouldn't slide around, and once I did that it got way more fun to play realistic racing games like Assetto Corsa. These past few days I've mostly been doing laps around VIR, but I also tried out some mountain pass racing which is more fun than I previously thought. This was my first time not using auto clutch and auto throttle blip, so my heel-toe downshifts are a bit rough, but here's one of the videos I made.

I had a bit of trouble with the front tires locking up under braking, since my heel-toe downshifts usually consist of me not only stabbing the throttle, but the brakes as well. You can also probably tell how I started to lose focus during the second half of the video because I recorded it pretty late at night. Also, is Assetto Corsa Competizione worth buying? I might get it if it goes on sale.

ACC is pretty fun if you're into proper competition spec race cars. No different to what you can expect from an F1 game in terms of locked down content. The cars all drive beautifully and the tracks are amazingly modeled. Takes a bit of effort if you want to finish with good results but otherwise very enjoyable.if all you want to do is race.  The AI can sometimes be derp but still worthwhile to keep around.

Just know that the tire feel between the two titles is on opposite ends of the spectrum but the basic fundamentals carry over.

Just yday I started my adventure with racing sims (AC, T150RS).

Did something like 20+ laps in Miata on Laguna Seca and I'm just terrible :D.

Not that I've ever raced but I feel my regular driving just doesn't transfer to the game in the slightest - I don't know the car, racing intricacies and lack of G-force hits me hard. I watched some beginner guide vids, read a little bit, still have this massive begginers guide to get through: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=912315488 but would be grateful if some of you well more experienced folks could steer me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance! :)

Since you dont have a butt gyro to aid, you have to shift your focus your senses to sight and sound. A good FFB wheel will help but as you're a beginner I wouldn't worry about hardware or car setup just yet. The most important thing is being smooth on your inputs - no throttle jabs mid corner that cause you to spin out, no sudden jabs of brake that make you lock up. The tires in AC are very temperature sensitive, it takes a bit until they warm up and if they get too hot its easy to spin. Don't be afraid to use assists until you get familiar if it helps.

Most important thing when in a new car/track combo is to take it slowly and get familiar with the car. Gradual inputs on steering and pedals until you get comfortable with staying on the track, then see where you can push harder. Don't panic when you get in the slightest slide and suddenly countersteer when you're not in control of the momentum, as this is a common error in real world driving. The fundamentals do transfer it just takes a bit of learning.

Slowcars are easier to learn in and more fun at the limit.

I don't have an amazing wheel either - just a G27 - but I know my way around most cars and tracks and use the audio in most games to tell when there's wheel spin or brake locking and adjust accordingly. The most difficult thing in AC was getting braking nailed, I still find tire behaviour more intuitive in other games.

That and how to manage downshifting with it before the corner is something I have the hardest time figuring out.

How do you put the two together?

Next one I noticed is not a smooth line when leaving a corner but this one I will easily fix, way more interested in the 1st thing mentioned.

Don't treat every gearbox like an F1 sequential. Slower cars need more time between downshifts to properly match engine speed with wheel speed. An engine is basically an air pump so when it's revving down, it acts as an engine brake - slowing you down in addition to physical brake rotors.

Wait a moment or two after you first hit the brake pedal, depending on how fast the upcoming corner is and how fast you're currently going. Shift down accordingly, spacing them out so you don't overrev the engine (electronics will prevent this but youll be stuck in a higher gear for longer). You can release the brake when you've almost matched the apex speed and coast through the entry towards the apex. If the corner is tighter, feather the brake pedal to trail the nose of the car inwards; if it's faster, feather the gas to maintain your mine.

Forget reading articles, iRacing has some pretty good fundamentals that I always recommend prior to league or multiplayer series.

Thanks for explaining the process, that's what I was looking for. I'm familiar with engine braking so I was downshifting first, then braking until I thought the corner speed was proper. While that gives additional braking power and rev control I was losing time needing to slow down sooner (was just throttling less) in order to avoid over-revving. Funny how I didn't even consider it as it's so obvious when you think about it. Really thanks a lot (although I still have that nagging feeling of trying to make my original approach work in the future - just for the heck of it :D).

Thanks for that as well. Found it in one of the threads somewhere on the net before but person who posted it linked only the very 1st video, not the whole playlist like you did, so I ended up visiting their site, feeling lost there and abandoning the idea. Will definitely watch the whole series (and probably more from their channel).

And then I guess practice, practice, practice.

Thanks for your time, will try to put in more of the above there and probably come back a bit more experienced asking for next directions :).
