Since the hard disk drive relies on four magnetic platters, it is 15mm thick – two times thicker than mainstream 2.5”/7mm HDDs – and cannot be installed into contemporary laptops. Toshiba positions its MQ03ABB300 as an ultimate solution for various storage systems that rely on 2.5” HDDs.

 

 

pretty interesting... im actually interested in this drive for myself... as i have installed full water cooling and removed all the 3.5" hard drive bays in my define r5 in favor of a pump and reservoir.... i'd like to install this in the second 2.5" bay on the back of the motherboard tray... depending on what deal i can get.

What the hell is the point if it's as thick as a 3.5" drive? You can't fit that shit anywhere.

I should have made myself more clear. Obviously, this drive will be very much "better than useless" for some people, but for almost every other situation where 2.5 in drive could be used, this one won't fit. So basically, it does actually serve a purpose, but a very limited purpose. And that's why it should have the award I guess. :P

The hotswap I put in Chibi PC to have RAID 10 array supports 15mm thick 2.5in drives. It is a standard at least in enterprise. I wonder what performance looks like. Maybe I'll look into them when my 750GB Scorpio Black's go.

yea its just not for ultra thin form factors in laptops. so, who cares? everyone should. because guess what, your icloud server, or google drive, or maybe even backblaze ... would use this drive.

if it performs well, and has already been said to use a fraction of the power of a normal drive... it will also likely put out less heat too. which is useful in that you can fit more drives on each electrical circuit.

Aren't there also some small cases with only 2.5" mounts (or where 2.5" would be preferred) and the thickness of the drive wouldn't really matter?
I guess this would be useful in those situations.
