Should we support AMD?

But aren't they EXACTLY like the 200 series? Like pretty much nothing's changed? Just an exact rebrand.

And I think their Fury X gets beaten by the 980ti and even costs the same? (less bang for buck) ? Or am I completely wrong here?

How many times do I have to say this, it was not a rebrand. The 200 series was a rebrand.

They are not identical... the architecture and core design is the same but the manufacturing process allows for more efficient chips that

1. Draw less power

2. Run cooler

3. Can overclock more

Its like what happened with the 4770k and the 4790k

Its the same manufacturing process. And no its not the same.

BUT it is cheaper by not a small amount and draws a signiifcant amount less power but the sapphire is cooler quieter and faster.

10$ more for quieter and cooler cards that draw the same amount - it's the same chip - Asus don't make low-power cards from Pixie dust and unicorn horns

Its the same manufacturing process. And no its not the same.

The actual improvement in the 390/390X over the 290/290X comes from better quality VRAM and denser chips as well as refinement to the power delivery of the cards.

There is a key difference between AMD and Nvidia graphic cards:

Nvidia need to do all of their optimization in drivers, because the hardware is very basic.

AMD optimization is done by developers, because the hardware is openly defined and easy to code for. The architecture takes care of variables.

If Nvidia went under, anyone using their hardware would be screwed. If AMD disappeared, anyone using their hardware would be fine for years.

If it wasn't for 3dfx we wouldn't get a lot of things we get from Nvidia cards anyway......

I was talking about SLI........which lead to ATi making Crossfire.

Nah - without 3DFX Nvidia would still be trying to not cook themselves with their cards and ATI would be spinning their wheels doing nothing

The X800 man - that was a card to be. The ATI 4870? That was the first GDDR5 card IIRC - while Nvidia were still sniffing glue.

The 5000 and 7000 series were AMD's most successful releases ever. The 7970 GHz Edition was kicking asgard and the 5870 was better than the 480 in every possible way. They didn't even make a 490 - that would have been to hot to be true xD

I know from the enthusiast view amd looks like they are on deaths door, but i think many forget how big they are in the cheaper lower end prebuilts that the vast majority of non techie people buy just to do basic tasks with, that being said, they need to step up their game if they ever want to be viewed as more than a budget brand.

if AMD falls then they will be bought or intel will be force to give a license to someone else or be forced to split

Pretty much on point.  The x86 agreement with Intel is that Intel has to have at least 1 competitor to use it.  If they don't, then they are not allowed to make x86 processors of any kind.

Intel is the LAST company on the planet that wants to see AMD fail.  I personally suspect that Intel isn't producing higher end components, not because they don't want to spend more money and reap profits, but rather because they don't want to pull too far away from AMD to create this huge market gap.

To all Intel fan boys, you WANT AMD to succeed as much as possible.  Not even so you have a "strong Intel" but because Intel couldn't make CPU's anymore.  (more or less).

In addition to this, AMD doesn't have nearly as much legal requirements of their AMD64 design.  If Intel died, AMD could continue to make AMD64 designed CPUs (of which Intel uses) and it is already incorporated into almost all modern OS's.  AMD could potentially not skip a beat if Intel was to fold, but Intel would certainly have to reconfigure everything and would be out of commission for months.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Think for a moment of how much debt AMD is in. Then think of how many consoles have actually been sold....
