LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) has added a Tesla to its (mini) arsenal of electric vehicles. Today LA mayor Eric Garcetti announced that they will be leasing 160 battery electric vehicles and 128 plug-in hybrids for the city's fleet of police vehicles. The fleet already includes 23 electric scooters and 3 fully electric motorcycles. The mayor has also required that electric vehicles constitute at least half of the light duty fleet by 2017 and to have 80% of the fleet be electric by 2025. 

 

Among the new leases of electric vehicles, the LAPD has received a Tesla Model S P85D and a BMW i3. These cars will be used for testing and research by the LAPD though, so don't expect to see them roaming the streets all too much.

 

Very cool stuff that the LAPD is doing, and kudos to the LA mayor for pushing the need of electric cars, even if it is just for their police force. Ultimately it's a good, and hopefully the mayor's ambition goal will be seen through.

We have a Smart here. Don't think I saw even once the advantage of it's small factor.

I wish there were better car manufacturers in the US like the Italians do. Pretty sure the Italian police force has a range of donated Pagani's, Lamborghinis, and not sure if Ferrari donates but I'm sure they have some in their arsenal. 

 

EDIT: Actually I don't know if Pagani donated to their police force. I know they donated some Tricolore's to their acrobatics team though  :lol:

In case anyone is wondering, these cars are lent to the police force, and all running expenses are covered by the manufacturer. They're pretty much only used at events to encourage community engagement with police. Unsurprisingly, there is an overwhelming amount of uninformed idiots who cry about 'muh wasted tax dollars', without knowing this.

 

The NSW police also have a Porsche, Aston Martin and Jag XF.

The i3 as most of the small cars, like the Opel Corsa they use in Berlin, will most likely just be cars to be quicker through the city and used for patrol than actual chases.
